The heater will keep trying to come on, even if the propane bottle is empty.

The furnace should try to fire a couple of times and if it does not detect heat it will shut down. I had this happen when I had a board fail.

the furnace will attempt to light (if I remember correctly) 5 times and then go into lockout. to take it out of lockout remove all power to the furnace and ensure you heave propane.

Everything that runs on propane will try to run when you run out of propane (refrigerator, hot water heater on propane, heater...) The electronic ignitions will continue to try to light the propane. There may be lockouts, but that depends on your appliance.
They do make a gauge that you can put on propane bottles that allow you to check and see how much propane is left like this one:

Also on the market are gauges like this:

$83 on Amazon and unlike the gauges this will tell you your Propane status long before you get low or run out. Sends percentage of tank remaining to your Smartphone app as well.

Gauges rely on tank pressure to guess the status. This setup measures only liquid level which won't vary like pressure with temperature changes.

You can also purchase just the sensor for $35 and just use your Smartphone as the "monitor" if you want for either single or dual tanks.

Running out of propane won't hurt a thing.

Most modern appliances have safety devices built into them to prevent any damage.

The toughest part about running out of propane is then having to purge the lines to every appliance once you refill your LP supply.

Do you have two tanks and an auto-change over regulator?
If so you'll always have propane if you learn how to monitor your LP indicator on the regulator.

I added a second LP tank and an auto-changeover regulator. We check the regulator every day when doing our walkaround before pulling out of camp. We literally walk around the TT and starting at the front of the tow vehicle we tell each other the status of tires, hitch, chains, LP gauge, chains, jacks, storage doors, awning arms, and everything that moves or should not move.
