Propane Alarm

Hello, I have a 2012 Solera that I’ve had for 2 years now and recently it’s not being used. One day a ear piercing steady alarm was going off and from what I’ve read I think it’s the propane alarm. I couldn’t smell any gas so I left the door open and the alarm soon went off. I shut the propane tank off. But a couple days later the alarm went on again with the propane off.
I can’t seem to find the location of the sensor, I read there should be test buttons and red and green light on it or am I wrong? Thanks GregClick image for larger version

Two things to check.
1. Is the battery voltage low. It will set off the alarm as the monitor will not work if the voltage drops too low. This is generally the cause for false alarms.

2. Has the detector exceeded its useful life. They generally last about 5 yrs and then alarm to let you know they need to be replaced. The sensor has a finite life.

Hello Flybob,
The RV is plugged in and the control panel shows full battery.
I did read they do need to be replaced after 5 to 7 years so I’m right in that time frame, the problem is I can’t find its location, any ideas where to starting looking? Thanks

Propane Alarm

Hello, I did find the detector, couldn’t see it with slide in. If the green light is on does it mean it’s good? Also will dust in the sniffer have any effect on it. Thanks ATTACH]182438[/ATTACH]Click image for larger version

When the alarm goes off does the red light come on? That's the way they are supposed to work. If not, you might need a new detector.

Other odors can set them off... especially cleaning products and sewer odors. I don't know about dust, but maybe.

Are you certain it's the propane alarm and not the fire alarm?

Hello Reverse Snowbird, the LP RED light is flashing and the RV is just sitting in the driveway empty with nobody in it so I’m assuming the detector probably malfunctioning since it is 6 years old, there is a smoke detector on the ceiling and the battery was completely dead. Do you know if the smoke alarm are HARD WIRED in Motorhomes or are they typically just battery powered. Thanks

The smoke alarms are typically battery powered. They usually beep just like home smoke alarm batteries until they go completely dead.

The propane alarms are typically wired to the rvs house battery.

Since you've turned off the propane and the red light is flashing, either you have a leak in your main propane tank, have another source of contaminant in or near the rig, the propane detector itself is bad or a you have weak house battery.

Now if the propane alarm goes on and off after several minutes without you hitting the reset button, it's possible that your rvs house battery is low. In fact, as someone else suggested, that's the most likely cause. The battery doesn't have to be dead, just weak.

Suggest you test the house battery first.

We have a 2013 with that same CO/LP detector that also started malfunctioning recently, LP alarm went off multiple times for no reason. It needs to be replaced.

There is a sticker on on the back of the detector with the date on it. Many times people find out the detector is a year or two older than the RV. 5 years is the maximum life of the detector.

The wall monitor is useless for telling the state of charge of the battery. It is actually telling you that your charger is working.

Propane Alarm

Hello Scrapper, I haven’t taken it out yet but it does say replace after 60 months on the front of it. And I didn’t know about the wall monitor not being accurate [emoji848]I did go out and put a meter on the battery and it shows 13.67 so at least that’s normal. Thanks

That does NOTHING to tell you the battery's actual condition.
It just tells you that the converter is charging.
You need at least a multimeter or hydrometer to test the battery without being connected to shore power.

Hello, I have another question with my propane detector, I received my new Safe T Alert Detector today and installed it, but now I have NO 12 volt power to the wires. Every thing else on the RV seems to be working and I don’t have any blown fuses and when I disconnected the old one it was still lit up. The 2 wires did connect to a pig tail so other things on RV shouldn’t be working, I’m not sure what else to check. Thanks Click image for larger version

Hello, I found my problem, there is a 3 amp fuse hidden underneath the drawer that I didn’t see, how it blew is another question but for now I’m not going to worry about it. Thanks Click image for larger version

At the risk of sounding like a broken record.... did you ever check the house battery?

Since the detector was 6 years old, you haven't lost anything, but we replaced the detector in our trailer and the problem resurfaced the next time we took it out. Turned out to be a low battery. Same problem on our miniMH.

Cool. Sounds like you've got it fixed and are ready to travel when you can.

Fuses underneath a drawer? Haven't heard of that before.

If your using the meter while plugged into shore power then you are measuring the voltage output of the charger, not the voltage of the batteries. When checking the voltage of the battery with a multimeter, you should disconnect either cable from the battery, let the battery rest for about an hour and then use the meter to check the voltage.
