Propane Tank Woes
One of my 30 lb propane tanks (3/4 full) has a broken valve. The knob (made of pot metal) literally broke off and will not engage the valve on the tank. Luckily it is in the closed position.
I called several propane companies they do not repair them and told me just to buy a new tank. I’ve seen the valves on Amazon for like $30 but is it worth it to try and replace ? Or is it just easier to buy the new tank for like $100 and be done with it ?
If I do get a new tank how do I dispose of the old tank that is ¾ full ?

I would just bite the bullet and get a new tank . the problem with replacement valves is getting a good seal and then certified . the new tank will just need to be pruged and filled and good for 12 yrs i think

Any DOT Certified Cylinder Requalifier can handle the old cylinder with the damaged valve. They have special tools and equipment to evacuate the contents. They deal with broken and damaged valves all the time. With LP gas they usually "waste" it by burning it off. Replacing a cylinder valve is not that easy. You need a cylinder vise and a mechanical valve wrench to extract the old valve and to insert the new valve. Not something you can do at home. If you elect to have the cylinder requalified by hydrostatic test, the valve has to be removed anyway.

Check with outfits like AIRGAS or PRAXAIR. If they can't do it, quite possibly they can point you to someone who can.

Good for you! You might want to share the name of the propane place in your locale in case someone else in that area requires a similar service.

The place I found to replace the propane tank valve was Blossman Gas they have several locations in NC. I will be using the Belmont, NC location.
