My 5ver is new, will I need to use a primer to put eternabond on my seams and around my vents?

If the roof is clean and the sealant is fresh, most likely no. However the EB is EXPENSIVE and I would hate to have it redone because it did not stick somewhere. Additionally it is hard to get up (not impossible; but a PITA) if a portion does not stick well. It is also very easy to cut the roof membrane trying to trim up a bubble or crease that did not stick.

IMO the primer is cheap insurance; use it.

You can also use acetone as a primer as per manufacturer instructions. They sell a primer (likely acetone based) and it may be more convenient and maybe have some additional cleaners or something. I used acetone and it seemed to do a good job. Acetone is rough on the hands (extreme drying agent) so you'll need to wear gloves.

I am sure the primer is spray acetone. The spray is worth the convenience and no worry of splashing it in your eyes or spilling it on the roof (bad!).
Just make sure you don't look into the little hole when you hit spray!

If you use acetone instead of the primer, do buy 100% acetone, not nail polish remover. There is a lot of other stuff that might nor be good in the dime store stuff. A place like Sally's has the good stuff.

Acetone is also available by the quart at Lowes and Home Depot in the paint department. DON'T spill it on the roof!

Anyone have issues with the tape sticking even when using acetone? Mine came off.
Perhaps I got a bad roll of tape?

I just received my rolls and tools. I missed getting the primer, but did get Acetone from Home Depot. I am going to do it during the summer when we are at our campground and while the kids are playing. I figured its going to take me a few hours. Should be fun in the Florida Sun in June

According to this thread, Acetone should be OK. I always worry about wind when I use sprays. I am not lucky enough to have an enclosed area to work in....

No, the only spot I had to do over was on that seam though.

I had two spots where I did not put enough primer down (trying to save the second can - why? I don't know) that failed to seal. I carefully cut away the bubble and resprayed and put a larger piece over it. I was just up on the roof and all seams are sealed solid now.

looks like the wind got that edge. I have one spot where the edge is exposed to the wind that I applied a tiny, I mean TINY, bead of roof caulk along the leading edge of the tape to protect against the edge curling up. No problems.

Do keep in mind that you do have to clean the back of the tape if you lap it, I think they put some type of non stick coating on it as they roll it up.

Will the acetone affect or remove any paint when you clean the surface?

Acetone will DISSOLVE paint; and plastic; and rubber; and fingers; and eyes; and is carcinogenic. All around nasty stuff.

Be careful.

Update:
Eternabond is replacing the tape and sending some caulking for the leading edges (as buzzards27 has mentioned)
They also suggest I use a roller this time.
Sooooo...round 2 coming up!

Eternabond is a great company to do business with! They stand behind their products and offered a solution. No questions asked. I highly recommend them.

Their web site was pretty specific about using a roller to provide pressure especially at the edges. I failed to mention I used a wall paper roller to roll out the air bubbles. Very happy to hear they are replacing the tape.

I had an end section of tape affixed to my front nose seam come up during my travel through very high New Mexico wind gusts. Even Eternabond can't survive those NM winds!

The NEW roof had been completely taped within 45 days of arrival from the factory and did not require priming, according to everything I read. However, I will use acetone for this repair and future repairs and, if I were to do it over, I would use primer.

Hey Lou,
They dealership I got mine from told me I could use Mineral Spirits to prep the surface with.

What do you think about that?
It seems to stick down ok so far.
I hope I'm not in for problems.
I cleaned it then rinsed it off with a hose, let it dry then applied the tape.

Bill
