low clearance warning

In the "old days" some cars had little, flexible wires on the side near the tires to warn when you were close to the curb. Does anyone know of a similar device you can put on the front roof to warn when you don't have enough clearance?

You could always do like the oversize load escorts (pilot cars) do, and mount a fiberglass pole to your front bumper that is set to the correct height

Back a few years ago we called them CB antennas but by the time you hear it its too late

I kinda hear what you’re saying but......

At what speed are you proposing for this idea?

I mounted my CB antennae 6” higher than my rooftop air conditioners on purpose for when we’re working our way into certain campgrounds and I can tell it may be a close call. I have my RV dimensions (weight and height) marked on the dash in metric and imperial. But in the campgrounds....it’s slow and easy, and listen for the CB antennae touching something. Then it’s “FULL STOP”

First, know your real height. Measure it at home and include the antenna, etc.

On highways and public roads anything under normal "Semi Trailer" height will have a sign or a ton of scars on the obstacle from vehicles that have run into it. Stop!

A painter's pole that can be extended to your overall height can be used to measure the low clearance if you wish. Maybe a socket attached to the front bumper to hold the pole would work.

Many states have resources that will list low clearance bridges, etc on state highways. As for Campgrounds, your mileage will vary. The last campground I went into was a National Forest Campground. I carried my pruning pole just to get down the last 5 miles of road to the campground. Roadside tree branches were a bigger problem than bridges.

I have thought about a CB antenna but just can't get up the nerve to drill holes in my 2017 F-350. It would be great though and would be dual purpose. I am 13' 6" so at the max. I did purchase the Giraffe G4 and it works great.

In all of my Millions of miles driving I never worried about the height restrictions unless I was going into downtown Chicago. Get a good GPS and follow the semi's you will be fine.

Following the semis works at truck stops and highways but sometimes there are no semis around. I like the GPS thing if it handles height, weight and propane.

I'm also 13'6" and also have a Giraffe G4 unit. It is unreliable at 60 MPH, but they tell you to be 30 MPH or less for accurate readings.

I also pay attention to semis - coming and going.

Nothing will help at 60 mph other than planning and watching for low overpasses.

I’ve been toying with mounting one of my go-pros on my front AC, 13’4” tall. And then looking at it on my iPad, really only will be good at slow speed though.
