Carl, not sure if you figured this out or not. My previous Rockwood HW 276 popup 2007 did this same thing all the way up till i traded it in for my new roo last year. i had the cable replaced in 2009 because it was fraying and it was still under warranty. even after it was replaced and adjusted it still made that sound, I wrote it off as being the weight of the top that it was lifting and the cable not exactly laying down in the wench properly. i don't think its going to cause much of an issue. it was sometimes loud enough to startle me. just be sure to check for major fraying of the cable and use best judgement on replacing it.
