Adjust Awning

I am having a issue with my awning where the arms do no align correctly when I close it up.

Here is what it looks like when I close it up





The tube looks like it is bowed but not sure how much that will hurt

I had same problem. Open up awning and look to see if it is straight in line with part attached to camper. Mine had slipped a little. I had to slide the canvas to line it up and that fixed the problem. The part attached to camper has end screws, but the open end does not, it is just slid onto the round roller.

It should be screwed in at the wall rail and free to move on the roller.

With a person on both ends, flap the awning material while tugging it so it is square with the rig wall.

Once the awning retracts correctly, shallow drill and pop rivet one end of the roller to lock the awning in place.

They make stiffener type things to slide into the awning tube for the bowed condition. My old 5er had about an 18 ft. awning and it bowed a little...the new one has a 20 or 21 ft awning and I am wondering about it. The repair is a star looking piece that goes in the tube,

Thanks guys, the open edge of the awning looks to be narrower that the edge attached to the wall.

Do I start moving it in the right as it looks like it is running off to the left?

I will have to look for that rod that slides into the roller tube

The material should be centered on the roller as close as possible. It may take running it in and out several times to make sure it closes all the way.

I will find center of the material on top end and measure it to one side and then do the same with the roller and start moving the material.

My awning on the slide does the same, just only on one arm, not both. Just looking at it extended and closed it looks square. Haven't measured it yet. Started it shortly after we got it. It's on a seasonal site and never gets towed.

I know we pop riveted both ends in my old and current awning, but I am concerned now that the awning material will warp as it shrinks and bow long rollers. Might be overkill to think that way.

Just flap the awning; the material moves easily. You will quickly discover which way it needs to go.

In a Perfect World flapping might work! If dirt/mud daulbers/pine needles/bugs have found a way to also enter the Awning slots "Top and Bottom" a Lot of water and Bull Dozer is needed! Youroo!!

You can use a motorcycle tie down strap to assist in adjusting the awning.
Open the tie down to about 5-6 Feet, open awning about 3 feet, Hook one end of tie down to top of wall portion of awning, hook other end of tie down
to awning tube support arm. This has to be done at both ends of awning.
now let awning all the way out, the tie downs will extend out to the adjusted length ( tie downs should be the same length) continue letting the awning out until the tension is relieved and awning has a deep sag in it.
now you can slide the awning forward or aft in awning rail on wall of camper or on the awning tube. you will have to close the awning several times to get it to roll up even. Once it is even, Use pop rivet on each of awning on tube. Now make sure you insert a short sheet metal screw in the awning rail on camper wall at both ends.


You may want to let the awning to be relaxed in the sun for a couple hours after you let it out with the deep sag to let it equalize from stretching before you start adjusting.

This should prevent your awning from shifting again.

Hi-- I have a Coachman 2014 freedom express 246rks trailer--the awning arms are straight out--are they adjustable (down) so i can get more shade--have loosened the thumb wheels and with 2 people, couldn't get it to budge..any thoughts ?

Thanks DB, I will give it a try but may have to wait a couple of days as we have 20 mph winds gusting to about 25 mph right now
