Awning maintenance

The awning on our TT is showing some deterioration at the point where it is attached to the TT and the first 1/2 turn of the roll. No tears or rips at this point. I would like to apply something to the first 6" to 8" to protect the most exposed area when fully retracted. What's your experience and suggestion of methods and material to use?

Thanks, Linda & Bob

A good UV protectant is about all one can do for the exposed portion. Aerospace 303 is one.

At best it will just delay the inevitable need to replace the fabric.

Awning Maintenance

I've used the 303 as well as other silicone-based chemicals. While they work and are good if used correctly and regularly.

This trailer is 6 yrs old and likewise the awning of the same age. I'm sure the previous owner did nothing regarding awning maintenance.

There are some thin spots along the area where the awning attaches to our TT. I'd thought about some form of tape but reports are that it doesn't last long and is noted to blow off during travel. Don't need that.

I've investigated "Flex Seal" in liquid which can be applied to the area with a brush. I realize this is likely a temporary fix and the fabric will need to be replaced in time.

If the thin spots aren't right at the channel in the anchor rail you MIGHT be able to get some more time before it completely tears by using some liquid vinyl repair materials or even some awning repair patching material.

If the damage is right next to the channel there's really nothing to anchor one side of the thin spot to and any effort will be futile.

If the awning roller and hardware is in good condition I'd start planning for some replacement fabric.

Follow UP

Normally after any rain when I unroll the awning it is dripping water and smells musty.

Since coating the first 12" of awning material from the TT roof outward, using the brush-on method application of Flex Seal, I've checked the awning after the rains. What did I find? A dry awning!

Now I feel as though I can give it a good cleaning, roll it up, and won't be bothered next time with a musty-smelling wet awning.

I'm pleased.
