Bad friction hinges

We’re having problems with our front door lock. It can be locked or unlocked, but it won’t open unless we apply great pressure on the door and then the lock will spring open. It was suggested that the friction hinges were bad/out of alignment, and we were told that the hinges are a common problem on Forest River RVs. Has anyone heard of or experienced problems with the front door lock?

Are there any scrape marks or gouging on the latch edge, bottom or top of the door or latch side, bottom plate or top plate of the door frame? If so, where is the scraping/gouging located. That will give some idea of what may be out of alignment.

Since Lippert is the primary supplier to nearly every RV manufacturer, it's not just a Forest River problem.
You'll find the same friction hinge complaints on many RV forums, not just here.
I had friction hinge issues on my 2016 TracerAir TT. PrimeTime had to order a complete new door/frame assembly from Lippert because the hinges weren't replaceable.
Forest River doesn't manufacturer the hinges.

Ours has scrapes on the top left side.of the door, hitting the outside door trim and then the frame.
What can be adjusted to stop this problem.

Is there no way to loosen the friction hinges? My Micro Lite door jumps open when you pull the latch and is terrible to close and latch. I was hoping someone had found an answer but I don't find one here.

I would look at simply adjusting the striker plate. It is likely set too far inward. Move the striker plate outward a bit and see if that fixes your issue.

Thanks but the door "at rest" is approximately 5 inches open. The latch will hold the door after you lean on it from outside or pull hard from inside but actually jumps open when you release the latch. I was hoping someone knew some way to loosen that, before I tear the hinge apart.

I'm to the point of taking the hinge pins out for hinge/pin modification.

I've used powered graphite, penetrating oil, gun oil, lock oil, fluid film and mayonnaise.

Well... not mayonnaise but you get my point.

My dealer (on complaint) said " Oh... they're all tight for a while but will loosen up." After almost 4 months wintering in FL using the door daily, it hasn't.

I feel your pain. I plan to tear into one of the hinges and see if I can get some relief. I miss that loose door on my old Surveyor that I used to cuss about.

Yep there is a way to disengage the friction hinges. I did it in my 2020 Phoenix 5er. Open the door so you can see the dimples on the hinge. Take a small drill bit and drill though till you hit the door frame. Should be 3 dimple per hinge. Now the door opens easy and closes easy without slamming. You now will need to add the outside door latch to hold the door from closing with the wind. Later RJD

The forum comes thru again. I assumed someone on here had modified their door. Was hoping for an adjustment instead of completely disable but now know it can be done. Thanks for the info.

Just drill out a few of them until you get the amount of friction you desire. That's my plan! -Ed

Unfortunately my friction hinges have no dimples.

I used spray lube, I don't recall if it was regular WD40 or the silicon version. It didn't seem to help immediately but over a few days it became much easier, still stiff but no longer difficult to open and close

Should be a correction on the drilling go till you hit the hinge bolt. Do not drill through it. Later RJD

I was having a real problem with the door on my 2017 FR Surveyor 200mble. Hard time opening and closing, sticking to frame in various spots. Tried leveling and not much help. In another forum string I read about
-PB Blaster is a penetrating oil-
It worked like a miracle!
Just take off the top rubber plugs on the top and bottem hinge sets, and spray liberally! It unstuck the hinge and will remain lubricating for a while.

Just wanted to add this note to the string and thank everyone on the forum for their help. This is the third issue ya'll have helped me with.

Cheers,
Mark
