Cardinal Luxury Window Patch

So, I messed up with my new RV. I stopped to take a nap, left the window open and poof! It was gone.

So, I had to figure out the best way to patch the hole for a month while I waited for the new window.

I'm a full timer, and I drive here and there, and can't really have a gaping hole in the side of my RV. My windows are "frameless", not it's not very easy to patch.

So, I started with some plywood and two by fours. And, then I wrapped that in plastic, and added some "Clamps". This is how it turned out:

I hope that this mistake will help others in the future that need to make a "patch" for a window.

Thanks for listening...

Nicely done. I wouldn't have thought of using hold-down clamps.

If the nice hold-down clamps weren't available, you might have built the outside structure as you did, and used 1x2 battens across the inside, with a pair of carriage bolts on each batten to clamp the structure together.

I thought of that, but I was alone. This allowed me to inert and remove the patch from inside the RV without having someone hold it up for me.

I was thinking about it, too.

I was thinking about it, too. You would have to:
  • Be inside
  • Put the patch with carriage bolts through the window and place it by holding the carriage bolts
  • While putting tension on a carriage bolt with one hand, insert a batten over the other carriage bolt (or bolts), put on a wing nut, and spin it down tight, using the other hand.
  • Now you have two hands free to finish.
  • Put a batten on the other carriage bolt.
  • Put on a wing nut and tighten it.

Not too bad, as long as you drill the holes in the battens oversized so they easily slide onto the carriage bolts.
