While retracting my awning I heard a clunking noise from the awning. When I went out to inspect the noise I found that the upper pin on the arm mechanism had fallen out part way. The pin is held in place with a star lock washer that apparently fell off. I was unable to install the pin back in to the arm assembly without removing the tension from the strut, so I removed the strut. After installing the pin I tried to install the strut but was unable to compress to install it. Does anyone know a procedure to install the spring strut? It should not be that hard to do but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get it back in. Thanks.
Is the end with the motor (towards the front of the awning)? Or the opposite end?

Tom,you need another person to help keep the spacers in place while putting the Pin through the arms and strut! Also I installed the Pin and spacers in the arm and Strut 1st,then use the Mechanical advantage of the attached arm to help "Compress the Strut" to install the "Top #9 Pin"! It is a BEAR! Youroo!!
The pin is on the motor side of the awning. This is a parts breakdown of the arm, part # 9 (pin) is the part I'm referring to. Strut #15 is the part I need to install but can't compress it to install. Attachment 170032
Have you tried extending the awning fully before you playing with the strut. The gas piston should be at its fullest extension. All you then have to do is wriggle the awning up and down a bit (get someone to stand on a short ladder and move the awning from the center), in order to line up the hole.
