I've never seen details on how to force it to extend.

I would think you could take the set screw out and extend just like you do to retract. It would be spring loaded wanting to retract on it's own though until you put the set screw back in. (provided it is this type of awning)
You might have to turn the roller tube by hand since you wouldn't have the emergency strap installed like you would if failed extended.
