Dometic awning

I have a dometic electric awning which I damaged while pulling into a driveway on our journey across Canada.We replaced the retraction spring but when we attempt to extend the awning, the cotter pin shears off. The awning is a 2012 on a 378 Georgetown and is about twenty feet long..The cotter pin in question is located on the left hand side at the end of the retraction spring. A dealer here in Halifax told us that we should wind the spring twelve times but we could only turn it eight times.. I would have no problem taking it to the dealer but he is unable to do anything for at least a week. Any info would be immensely appreciated.

I think the cotter pin is supposed to be removed once the awning is installed, but read the instructions.
