Dometic Awning motor died

We purchased a new camper in July 2105 so we would not longer need to deal with continually repairing things. The joke is on us. We went to open the awning last week and nothing, the motor is already junk.
Dometic should be embarrassed to produce such a product that only lasts 1 1/2 yrs. And no, our model is too new for the recall.

Look at it this way... if you didn't buy your camper until 2105... youve got a lot of time before it breaks!

Seriously, things break/quit working even on new units.
Did you purchase the 2nd year warranty? Have you spoken with your dealer? Things often get fixed even out of warranty if you ask nicely.

No, I did not purchase an extended warranty.

I did speak with the dealership and they were very nice about it and agreed that it should not have died in such a short time but it would not be covered under warranty.

I've replaced three of those awning motors in five years. Fortunately our extended warranty covered them all. This last one has lasted longer than the others... Keeping my fingers crossed seeing as how our extended warranty is now expired

Having a spare on hand may be a good idea.

Oh NO,,, that is not good... nothing to look forward to. I have an extended warranty on the refrigerator, maybe I need to see if I can get one for the awning also.

I don't know if I'd get an extended warranty just for the awning, especially as the prices on the ones Herk found were really cheap. And they are easy to replace

Question, I do you retract the power awning from the open position with a bad motor?

He means the 2nd year factory warranty, from FR, for $150.
But you don't have your RV listed, not sure if it was available for yours.

Mine always failed in the open position. On two I could just get on a separate ladder and roll it in by hand while my wife pressed the retract button (guess it unlocks the motor?)and then zip tie the arms. On one, the roller wouldn't move even with the button pushed, so I had to take out the bolts in the end so I could roll it up.

Mine died in the closed position... but as Wildcat stated, you can close it. If you forgot how, there are instructions in your manual on how to close the awning without power.

I was not offered an extended warranty from FR for $150. Only warranty we were offered was close to $500.

Dealers often fail to inform customers of this because they don't make any money on it.
But they do on 3rd party warranties, like the one they tried to sell you.

That figures. A $150 warranty would have been a totally different mind set than a $500+ one.

3rd one

Well to answer first one failed in the out position,, bolts had to come out to roll it back in, week after the second one was put in it would only retract 3/4 way then would stop and start clicking, would have to let it down a for all second or two then it retracts the rest of the way, now waiting on 3 to to come in..... all warranty work just adds to the list...

Did anyone try calling Dometic about the motors that quit on the new trailers that failed? I have contacted them twice on issues our dealer said they could not, or would not, fix. Both times Dometic fixed the problems free. This last one is all new hardware on two awnings. Parts and labor covered free. That is good customer service. It is worth a phone call or email.

You must of caught them on a good day! On my first bad motor I called them direct as the awning paperwork said it had a 2 year manufacturer's warranty. They pretty much told me to go away and go through a dealer. They did suggest to replace the switch also, but it didn't make any difference. After that I never messed with them again. Glad you had better luck!

I did contact Dometic.... after over 2 months I finally got a reply letter from them. I am sh*& out of luck. I found it quite interesting that the letter from Dometic states that the awning motor was OVER a year out of warranty. Hmmmm.... yes a year out of warranty until they finally replied to me but July - May, last time I checked was not a year.
Any one purchasing an electric awning, I would certainly look for another brand - NOT a Dometic.
