Dometic Awning Not Working

Need advice with awning problem. The awning is a Dometic 917NS21 (at least that is what the chicken scratch on the appliance info sheet appears to state.) The awning worked well last fall when winterazation was done and yesterday (4/19) when I de-winterized it only clicks. Today I brought the trailer home and have checked the voltage at the switch. I have 12.6 VDC when in off position and ~10.6 VDC when either extend or retract is selected. I have 20.7 ohms resistance through the motor measured at the switch with the wires disconnected. Still trying to find any useful technical info. Thanks in advance for any info you can offer!

Mine was working last fall as well, now it just clicks when I press the switch. So I priced a new motor from Dometic, they wanted 423.00, Tweety's was 386.00. I found a place online that sells refurbished ones on EBay Motors for 70.00, I ordered it Monday, and put it in today, now my awning works again. The old motor looks like it got wet and maybe froze wet. So mine is fixed now.

Yes it does sound the same. And yes, I have found refurb motors on-line. Now let me ask if I should be able to unroll the awning at least a few inches? It will not move other than and 1/4". There will be not way to drill out the one rivet. Good grief I found a video on the Dometic site, the subject of which is replacing the motor and one of the first steps they list is too "run" the awning out a few inches. If the motor ran....WHY WOULD YOUR REPLACE IT??

OK, any thoughts on how I get the awning to unroll a bit??

No joy. But now it has quit clicking. I am getting good voltage at the connector just prior to the motor. Was able to move it a little with a pry bar. Need to get help to pry both sides at once.

Thanks Turbs, I figured it out. Had to remove the 1/4" bolt and pry the the whole works up out of the motor end arm and then I could turn the awning enough to get the rivets drilled out. The motor is seized up tight. The odd thing is it is very clean and there is no signs of water. I have a refurb on order, so I may just try to disassemble this one tomorrow to see what happened.

Mine looked like it was wet so it might have froze over the winter. But it works now, The refurp one is half as noisy as the one that came with it. Pretty simple to swap ot, just a bit time consuming, but you already found this out

Good luck, let us know what it was

Once I tore down the assembly to the bare motor it definitely looks like it has been wet. The motor is seized and will not budge. I am guessing the water rode right in on the wires. I am gonna try to seal that up on the replacement.

I had the same exact thing happen to my awning, it worked in the spring and by fall it had stopped working, just clicked. I tried to tap on it with a rubber mallet as one person suggested, with no luck. Then called a mobile tech who said the motor was froze up and would need replacing. Got it done last week, cost $386 to have it replaced and while they were there had them replace the awning fabric too! Awning was crumbling from the Hot Florida sunshine. $850 later awning and motor replaced.
Going camping!

Dometic recall

Be sure to check.......there was a Dometic awning recall awhile back where the awning would quit working. If you are under the recall, they send the part and have a local person come fix it for free. We had this done last fall on our 376BHOK. Do a google search and you can find the requirements to see if your awning is under the recall.

Thanks, but I did find info on that recall popped up right away when I first searched out info. Although I don't remember the exact serial numbers, it was a range in the 300's and my serial number starts with 402.

The number on the roller

Just be sure you are checking the right number for the recall. We had quite a time finding the one they needed. It is on the roller itself (metal part I think), not the awning fabric. Take a picture of the numbers with your phone. Easier that way. I called them with several numbers before we finally found the right one. The awnings for the recall were installed over several months in the spring of 2013. Our RV is a 2014, but still under the recall because we bought it new in spring 2013. They had already changed the RV year 2014 at the time.

Yep I got the right number and per the recall the units were manufactured between February 13, 2013, [306XXXXX serial #] through April 9, 2013 [314XXXXX serial #]. My camper was built in early 2014 and the serial number is 402977760!

I carry 2 spares, one white and one black which if I need it, will paint it white. Got one on ebay for $75 and the black one with a 21' tube for $100 from a forum member who delivered it to Goshen 2 yrs ago.

Just looked on ebay and found this a few minutes ago.

If your going to Goshin there is an RV junk yard about 5 miles down the road they have brand new awning motors for 35.00 bucks last year the tag is still on it but was the last white one, Buy a couple at that price just for spares. I bought one last year. BUT DO NOT USE THE OUTHOUSE... PS: They have everything and anything you can think of. It's Amish owned and they buy salvage...
