HELP! Can I replace the MORryde type steps
Hello,
Just bought a 2023 Rockwood 2513S. We have a problem. Cannot fold the steps down when parked in our driveway.
they are the 3 step model. Too close to the house to fold them down. No room to park further away unless we want to take out the neighbors house.
Neighbor does not want us pulling trailer forward when loading and unloading as we are on his lawn and putting a dent into his lawn.
Any suggestions on what brand we can replace with?
My other plan is, to put our garden ladder next to the trailer and climb over this to the inside while my husband holds the steps like this. At 65 years old not my favorite option. Still limber enough I could do it.
Thanks

That looks like a 4 step unit..is that right? They do make a 3 step unit. Not sure if that will work for you but it is shorter.
If not from looking at your pic it does not appear they built the box under the door to add the standard fold out stairs.
You might just have to pull it out of the garage area whenever you are ready to load/unload. That would definitely be a pita…
Good luck…

These are the 3 step model. No box to mount the under mount, which we prefer.
Neighbor would prefer us not pulling forward when loading and unloading as the tires put a dent in the grass. He has gone in with us to put a concrete slab on his side of the property of us to store our trailer. Do not want the make enemies of a current good relationship with our neighbor.
Not sure if a scissors type will work.
Thanks

Sounds like you have a good neighbor, for sure.
Maybe you can remove them when needed…

I believe TorkLift has a set of steps that folks buy to swap out the steps you have. The steps solve the problem you have. I believe Torklift shows your problem, but instead of your house, it’s a semi that is parked close enough to create the same issue you have.

Look at the Torklift GlowStep Revolution Uprising steps. They fold up into the door the way the MORryde steps do but they accordion out so you can use them in that situation.

Hi,
I saw a similar video. Got so excited and went to check my steps. Mine do not have a pin to be able to remove.
So bummed.
Thanks for sharing the video though. Might help someone else.

Any design engineers here?
Cut the Morryde steps in half and hinge them together so the bottom folds onto the top. Still need enough room though at the bottom.
Regardless, put a piece of plywood between the steps and and the wall and secure it.

Torklift has a contact point on their Glowstep page if your model number isn’t listed. You are able to give them your make/model of rv and they check to see if they have a solution.

Can you pull forward until the steps will fold down with legs up so they are off the ground and them back up to where you need to be? Then lower the legs to the ground. Don't know if you have enough room for this between the steps and the house. Just a suggestion.

Hi Bweigele,
I took a look. Unfortuntely the front of our house extends past where the neighbors yard starts. So our trailer tires land on the neighbors grass. Our lots are close together. Just have about 6 inches each side of the trailer between the roof. If we don't get new stairs I will plan my loading of the trailer just before leaving and pull the trailer out to the street to access.
We just brought the trailer home. Once set with everything I should only need to load food and clothes for trips.
Thanks for the idea.
Diane

I have the same type of steps except instead of folding down, they attach at the door frame and are removable. We stow them in the basement when not in use. I like these a lot better than the fold down type. I still get the solid steps, but not the access issues. My trailer had the original fold out steps under the doorway. These steps are still there and can be used when the other steps are not attached. From your picture, it looks like you would have enough room for the steps if they were already folded down. so this could work for you.
Installation was super simple. There are two small brackets that attach below the door with 2 screws each. Then the steps just snap into and out of the bracket.
The only thing is I can't remember if they are made by morryde or solid step. I think they are morryde.

Your steps will remove with a handful of screws that go down through the mounting plate and into your floor.
The Torklift Steps are a great option...with the stability of the MORryde steps and the flexibility to deploy anywhere...even at different pitches.
Word of caution. The link provided shows Torklift steps replacing the old fashioned collapsible steps...in which there is a structure attached to the RV frame/floor that holds those steps. Make sure that the Torklift steps you choose are made to replace steps that do NOT have that structure. The Torklifts must be able to attach to the floor and/or frame of the RV.
Note that this picture depicts Torklifts either using that existing structure or having its own, similar structure.
ON THE OTHER HAND, if your rig has that under structure for conventional steps (a vestigial component that's not used), conventional steps would also be an option. I replaced my conventional steps with MORryde steps, so my structure is still there.
Finally, you may be stuck with adding some sort of threshhold where the MORryde steps covered the joint between the floor and side-wall and door frame. My MORrydes fit right over the existing threshhold, but yours came from the factory that way, so you may not have a conventional threshold. Perhap the Torklifts include one, or you could buy something at the hardware store.
I'm sure Torklift can handle replacing the MORrydes, but be sure they know what they are replacing. And you may need to do some significant drilling if the conventional step frame is not there. Sure, vestigial holes for a conventional step may already be in the frame...if you're lucky. But if the conventional step mount is gone, the holes may be, too. Yes, anyone can drill, but you may be drilling 1/2" or larger holes through the RV frame. Not a big deal, but this may be beyond the capacity of a cordless drill. If so, you may rent or buy a 1/2" corded drill, a couple good bits of the right size (because it's easy to break them), and read up on using oil when drilling in metal. You'll also need a handful of 1/8" and 1/4" bits to drill pilot holes...again spares because they often break...especially as you are breaking through the steel. Finally, be sure to have the side handle on the drill, because when you're drilling a 1/2" hole in steel and you break through, the drill wants to break your wrist. Don't forget eye protection from all the drill shavings. Of course, you could get them installed. If someone agrees to do it for $100, jump at it. But I digress.

Jimmoore13,
Thank you for all this information. I do think I will have someone install. Husband can do some things. This might be out of his comfort level.
Thank you, Diane

We had the same problem and replaced with the Torklift mention above. They work great and folks at the factory were easy to work with.

The link I provided references both the Revolution (conventional rv steps) and the Revolution Uprising (folds inside door opening). In addition Torklift provides a way to contact them if you do not find your rv, listed in their fitment lookup, for them to see if they have a solution for your particular rv.

Diane, Loading it when it's in the street is probably your cheapest and best option at the moment. Some type of wagon will make it easier. They make fold up wagons for traveling to help with getting clothes to the laundry.
The situation with the neighbors lawn is more troubling. Damaging a neighbors lawn can result in hard feelings. Eventually you may be forced to rent off site storage if you do a lot of traveling and are pulling it in and out frequently.

I think you may just be able to remove the steps by pulling the 2 pins on the piano hinge and use a step stool while in the driveway. They are exposed with the stairs in the up position.
