How to drill holes in awning arms

Good day,

I'm looking to drill a couple small holes in the U shaped awning support arms. I saw on some of the "LED lights on awning" threads that some of you have done that. What kind of drill bit do I need, and what tips are there for drilling (I've seen some guys spray WD-40 on alluminum before drilling through it).

Thanks

You didn't say the size of the holes you want to drill...if it's bigger than 1/4", I'd drill a pilot with a 1/8" drill and then drill to the final size. Aluminum is very easy to drill, any high speed steel bit will be just fine and no lubricant is required. Just center punch the location is make it easier to start.
