Power awning rolled up under-side out

First trip, I extended the awning all the way. At the end of the day I retracted the awning and it rolled up with the under-side on the outside. Worried all night. Next day rolled it out just shy of fully and retracted it and it rolled correctly.

Is there a problem or do I just need to not fully extend it?

I would guess your switch is faulty as it didn't reverse.

Any chance that you mistakenly pushed the extend when you wanted retract? It will roll up the awning inside out.

After thinking about it, would the torsion spring not have to disconnect from an internal stop or fail for it to roll backwards?

Sounds like a torsion spring fail otherwise it's not possible.

Mine has done it a couple times over the span of a year. It typically happens if I over extend the roll out. I just stop and roll it out again and when retracting it is correct. There is no issue with mine and am on the 4th year of ownership and to many cycles of the awning to count.

With a manual awning I would agree there is no way for it to roll up backwards, but with an electric awning - absolutely. There is no 'hard stop' on an electric awning, it just unrolls until extended and if you don't take your finger off the button the motor keeps spinning which will result in it rolling back up inside out using the tension created on the awning and the catalyst to travel back to the closed position.

I don't believe there is anything wrong with your awning, just probably pressed the wrong button when trying to retract.

The power awning has a torsion spring just like the manual awning.

Sorry folks, the only way it will roll up backwards is if the torsion spring is dis-engaged or broken in the opposite end of the motor.

Thought they could only go out a till they were open. When I open mine it goes out and stops on it's own, thought there was a limit switch somewhere in the thing. Also thought the spring couldn't let this happen would have to think the spring is not connected anymore. Make sure and secure it somehow, so it can't open while going down the road, before you transport it for repairs since what normally holds it in probably isn't working either.

Unless you wrap something around the roller, there is no way to keep it from unrolling while going down the road other than the motor itself. I made a tab that I lock down to restrain the roller itself.

I think the first question we should ask here is: What model awning do they have? If it's a Dometic then yes, there is a torsion spring, but it could be one of the LCI / Lippert. If so, then there is no torsion spring, only a motor and it could be rolled inside out.

If it's a LCI Solera power awning, there isn't a internal torsion spring like in a Dometic or Carefree.
