Stopping Water Collecting in Awning

After using our pop-up with the awning in a bag with no problems for years we now have a TT with a manual awning that rolls up.

However whenever it rains water collects in the rolled up awning and will likely cause mildew if not opened regularly. This seems like a rather silly design. Leaves and gunge also collects in the space between the awning and the roof/drip rail as well.

The slide topper is installed to drain water off the rolled up awning so does not get as wet and nothing collects on it.

Are there any ways to enclose the awning to keep it dry?

I haven't seen a way or accessory to keep it dry. Unless you want to wrap it in something while in storage.

The awning manuals recommend unrolling it and letting it dry after a rain.

Mine has been wet internally for weeks after a heavy rain.
The rain comes in the ends on my motorized awning.

I read about this on another forum:

"When parked with the awning up, you can used a plastic liter soda bottle. Keep the cap on, cut off the bottom, and with a razor knife cut a slice up one side. Slide the plastic bottle over the end of the awning to keep the wind blowing rain inside the ends."

Found these pics on yet another forum. Same basic idea, just using the other end of the soda bottle. Sorry the second pic isn't too clear but you'll get the idea. Not suitable while travelling.

I just received a stainless steel hinge that I am going to experiment with using it and a short pc of 6" dia. pvc drain pipe to cover the ends. Have to figure out how to connect it to the awning material so it will be usable while towing.

Thanks I will try the field modifications and perhaps expand on them.

The slide toppers seem to be set up to keep the water out better and the debris.

Some kind of cover would help with the awning as well as the tree debris on the roof since there is a tree near my driveway.
