Tilting Awning
We are fairly new to trailer camping and of course learning more each day.
We have 2015 FR Air 215. Ive been researching tilting awning for rain run off.we have pulled down on awning arm and tried tightening wheel. Even though wheel is tigh awning still goes back up. The awning is a dometic.

My dealer mechanic, during the PDI, told me that I can pull down and crank the hand screws tight to lock an angle on one side or I can leave them loose and that the Dometic awning is designed to collapse one of the leg springs at around 8 LBS of water and self-dump the weight. I have not been out in rain as of yet to test his theory, but I was wondering if anyone else has heard or this self dumping? I grew up with a park model camper that had fixed arms that clicked into various positions of angle or tilt. My father would always keep one outer corner dipped lower than the other for rain shedding. Based on my growing up in the 70's and seeing that, I am reluctant to trust this spring loaded auto-dump.

They do self-dump however the concern is wind. If I don't clamp down and strap down, the wind will blow it over. I still tilt one end, clamp the screws down and then tie it down. Trust me, after losing one awning and scratching my full paint unit, I won't make that mistake again.

They do auto dump, but I usually set a tilt so the rain sheds in the direction I want. But I just endured a gully washer and the tilt had not stayed set for some reason and I had not noticed. The auto dump feature worked, the one side dropped, shed the water and popped back up, then the other other side dropped but it was raining so hard, it stayed down and the constant waterfall was spectacular. It only lasted a few minutes, so when the rain finally let up, the awning popped back up. Got a nice car wash out of that storm.

I've never seen the auto dump work on ours. I'm afraid to let it get too heavy.
What year and type of trailer do you have?

Not all awnings have a auto-dump feature. I have the same brand of RV that the OP has and it does not have an awning with auto-dump.

The "wheel" is actually a bolt with a plastic star-shaped knob on the end. When you tighten it (righty tighty), it clamps down the assembly by drawing a small metal plate against the awning strut and the slide piece attached to your RV sidewall. So...there doesn't seem to be any clamping going on!
Try getting on a step ladder to closely examine the effect of tightening the knob. Can you see the bolt going through the metal plate? Are the threads intact? Is there a metal plate? What happens if you loosen the knob?
