Window seal: What the heck is this?

I am now reinstalling some of the windows I
removed to rebuild my Cherokee. All so far
were sealed with Putty Tape, which I replaced
and reinstalled. But this AM, I went to reinstall
an "Escape Hatch" window and found it "sealed"
with this black goop. It looks like it was a foam
type seal originally. But there was *much* rot
around this window and evidence that the former
owner seems to have used everything but the
kitchen sink in a vain attempt to stop the water
intrusion. I think that something he used must
have reacted to the ?foam seal?, partially
melting it. It seems to be almost liquid in
several places.

So the question(s) for those with experience is:
What the heck is this seal? Do I need to replace
it with another black thingy or can I go ahead
and seal with Putty Tape - like the other windows?

I would use the butyl tape and not worry

It is automotive window seal. You can by it by the tube at an auto parts store. It is high strenth, water and UV resistant.

I don't think it came out of a tube. One small spot
seems to be almost intact and looks like a foam strip.
Definitely too defined an edge to be from a "squirt".
Can't tell if it is open cell or closed cell though. I am
wondering if it was put in but FR - for a valid reason -
or by the PO for some ????? reason. If if is there for
a good reason, maybe I need to replace it with a new
one. Otherwise, its Putty Tape Time.......

I was looking at the windows in my new Surveyor SV-264. They have some kind of a black rubber or neoprene foam seal, that didn't come out of a caulking gun. I don't know what it is, but it seems to have been installed properly. It seems that they pull in on the window assembly to seat the seal and hold that pressure while they install the screws. It appears from your picture that you had the same thing, and it reacted to something it came into contact with... kind of like the way soft plastic lures used to melt tackle boxes...

Late Breaking:
A second window has a similar situation.
[The other 3 are "normal" Putty Tape.]

The black stuff is definitely a foam strip of
some kind. On this window, there is a bead
of gray soft material. Feels kind of like dicor
or C-10. But a lot softer. I think that is what
is causing the black stuff to "melt" on the first
window.

Clearly the previous owner(s) had the second
window - and maybe the first - out and applied
some glop on top of the foam. What I don't
know is whether FR or the PO put in the black
foam originally. Might make a significant difference.


Also noticed that this window had Putty Tape residue.
And the Putty Tape was on the surface that seals to
the skins and the ?foam tape? was on the surface
that seals to the wood part of the frame....???....

Geez!!! What a mess.
