21fbrs slide seal question

There is a black "flapper" gasket on the bottom side of the slide that is divided by what looks like a steel u channel that houses the gears for the slide. This gasket is about an inch on either side form this u channel, allowing daylight in (if u look under the couch). I called the dealer and they stated the rubber seal will get bound and rip the whole thing off if it touches. Opinions? I thought if that true I could close the hole up myself when slide is out.

My seal is cut right at the channel. It isn’t a tight seal but should keep out most air.
