Do levelers have to be down for slide operation?
I know the basic rule that levelers should to be down prior to slide operations. I keep my RV in a pole barn a few hundred feet from the house. I pull it over to the house before and after a trip to ease in loading and unloading. I like having the slides open to load or clean up after a trip. Seems excessive to let suspension out (diesel pusher) and put levelers down just for a day or two sitting in the level driveway. Thoughts?

Unless a diesel pusher has some sort of interlock the answer is no.

Many RVs come with slide outs, but not all even have levelers.
If your RV has known problems due to frame twisting on uneven ground, and if your barn floor is very uneven, then maybe in your particular case you need the levelers down. But, as a general rule, the answer is no.

While I try to get as level as possible and not be in any kind of twist when parking somewhere that I'm going to extend the slides, I don't 'level' the unit before deploying the slides unless I'm staying.
My unit sits under an overhang of a pole building garage. I seldom have the stabs down parked there (unless we have guests staying in it) and we run the slides in and out all the time.
I've only ever seen manufacturer's voice concern over severely out of level units or those on a twist of some sort when it comes to using the slide(s).

How many times have you been to an rv show or dealer lot, walked through a rv and the stabilizers weren't down . Look next time, there's your answer

Actually, 5picker has 3 golf carts, one for pulling, one for pushing, the last for turning, but he can only make right turns.

I don't think it matters if the levelers are down when you extend or retract the slides. But, from my experience, it does matter if your rig is not level.
Slide actuation systems don't have a lot of excess pulling/pushing capacity so if your rig is not fairly level it can cause the slides to get off center and bind. That can strip gears. Also you may end up pulling a slide, which is very heavy, up hill. That adds some of the slide's weight to the already large frictional drag of just moving the slide across its rollers.
There are times when I am just staying over night and my rig is level that I put out the slides without the jacks being down. But, if my rig is not level, I always level if first before actuating the slides. And, sometimes, my bigger slide actually tilts my rig even with the levelers are down. When that happens, I manually tweak the levelers to bring it back to level.
