Question Repair Service Rip-Off ???

Would appreciate forum members opinion on a recent repair. Annual spring migration back to our home in northern MN from Mission, TX we stopped for a week at relatives acreage on MN/IA border. When we decided to continue our trip north one side of a electric slide-out refused to retract. After my efforts to fix the problem I determined it was above my skill level. Called mobile repair service as I couldn't travel with slide out extended. Problem was slide out motor on one side had seized and needed to be replaced. The question: Mobile service traveled approx 50 miles (one way), 3 hours repair time, and new motor. Repair cost.....$400.00. In your opinion was this cost excessive, average or very reasonable. All previous repairs were under warranty and this is the first time I have had an out of pocket expense on a 2015 Cedar Creek 38FL 5th wheel. Your thoughts?

With travel time of another hour and a half to two hours , 3 hours repair time and parts. I think that's more than fair considering he came to you because you coould not move with the slide stuck out.

That seems like a really good deal to me. How much was the motor? Most RV shops would have charged you $120 an hour just for the labor. You would have had the joy of bringing it to them and leaving it for 6 weeks plus this time of year, too. Then they would have charged you massive markup on the motor. The more I think about it, the more I think you should be jumping up and down that you got it repaired for so little- and you didn't have to do a thing.

Way more than fair for that type of repair, done at YOUR location. MHO.

You are almost at 5 hours when you add in travel time. How much would you pay if it was your local Ford (RAM, GMC) dealer charge?

I think you got a good deal.

I hope you gave a big tip. that price seems incredibly low. and you were fortunate that he had the motor with him otherwise you'd have another trip just to get it. by chance did he explain if it was possible to retract the slide manually.

Sounds like you got a great deal! Is this a "humble brag"?

As a home owner, I've paid a lot more than this for a lot less after making a phone call that started by asking for the service department.

This service person got you out of a tight spot and could have really stuck it to you and you would have had to just pay it. I've seen some Mobile RV service techs that I wouldn't trust to repair anything. I'd be happy to pay this bill.

VERY reasonable... considering HE came to you and had part in stock.

Sounds like a very good deal to me!
I'm in AZ and the mobile guy I use is $95 as I recall plus $75 service call. I'm close to him so not sure how he would charge for his travel time or if it would be in lieu of the $75.
He marks up the parts as well, I'm sure or he'll install what I'v received as well.
I thought what he charged was pretty fair. Especially since it saves me from pulling the 5er out of storage to take to my normal repair place.

This is just me, I would....

1. When I got home, I would call the service man/company and thank them for the good service and price and tell them that you are going to post that and their service information on a web site that you belong to.

2. Learn, when I got home, how to get the slide in manually when a motor goes bad. Because I know that in the future a motor will go bad again and I will not be close to a RV service. I would then be a 'hero' in the eyes of the DW for being about to fix most things with duck tape, a board, and a hammer
Just me.

Any chance it can still be covered under warranty? Have you contacted your warranty provider to find out?

Most excellent advice. And keep their phone # handy in case you are in their area again on a future migration.

Agree with other posters: Very reasonable pricing.
