Square Drive Shaft Bolt not Tight

One of the bolts that hold the square drive shaft on to the rear slide gear shaft is not tigntened all the way. (See photo on left). The one on the front slide gear apears ok. (See phot on right.)

My instincts tell me to tighten the screw, but then I checked the other side on our unit and found the exacts same situation...Rear not tightened , but front is...so now I'm not so sure.

Any comments would be apprciated.

I don't think it matters as long as it's a self-locking nut. The bolt is a sacrificial shear pin to prevent damage to the drive should the slide-room jam.

It is NOT a nyloc nut so the bolt could be a shear pin. I would put a wrench to it just to see if it would tighten easily. It doesn't look like there is a lock washer in place either so maybe the nut is working loose. Does the bolt which is tight have a lock washer? Come to think about this, it seems I have seen this before but don't remember where or when. If both of the slides are the same it may be the way it was intended.

I would replace all the nuts with nyloks and just snug them up.

I just looked and they are lock nuts and they are just like the ones on the landing gear square drive. The bolt does not move back and forth thru the gear shat hole, but if it is like the one on the landing gear, that hole is threaded.

Another observation is that on both slides, the nut that is not completely tigned in on the motor end of the shaft. I'm not sure what that means, but it is interesting.

Maybe the LCI guy that I met at the Goshen FROG Rally is learking on the forum. He mentioned to me that he intends to start doing that.

The nuts don't have to be tight, they just have to have the nylok engaged, they are just shear bolts.

That's what I'm inclined to do. I can't think of any mechanical reason for leaving that space...even if it is a lock nut.

Thank OC
