What slide topper to self-install?
I know there are a lot threads on slide toppers, but I didn't see a recent one on actually installing one. If there is such a thread, please point me there!
Where should I order one from? Any particular brands to look for? Any specs or features I should get?
Any general installation advice would be great also.
long story...
I bought a new RV and requested a slide topper. When I went to pick up the RV, the dealer forgot to install the slide topper. Instead of waiting another week and continuing to deal with this dealer (not a great experience) I decided to go another route. There is a local guy that does some general RV and tow vehicle work. He sounds experienced enough to get the job done, but he hasn't done many of these. I'll be installing this slide topper with him since it takes two people. Before I order the topper with him, I'm doing as much research as I can.

A slide topper is really just a awning to cover the slide out and keep debris out of the slide.
Check your warranty though - will installing the topper void any kind of warranty on your slide out? (i.e., well, you did not have a dealer installed topper and the damage to your slide is caused by a wrong topper...BS yes I know, but dealers can be slime balls )

There is a video of step by step installation on the web in YouTube I think. Can't remember where but a search of "RV slide topper installation" will probably be a good start.

Are any of the awning brands better than others or are they all pretty much the same?
I get what you are saying about the warranty. Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't really care. The warranty is good for a year, the slide topper should in theory help my slide last for years. Getting the dealer to install this topper will be too much of a hassle for me.
Yep, I did find the youtube video, thanks.

I have Dometic brand awning toppers, I believe. If I understand correctly, there are those with some kind of cover and those without. But, I just told my dealer that I wanted slide toppers after the camper got to his lot from the factory. I didn't ask for anything in particular. I can check for details on the topper itself the next time I'm at the camper, though.

Zesty,
Sorry you are having issues with your dealer. I would recommend you go a forest river approved service depot top have them installed. This will protect your investment and warranty. I am sure FR can supply a helpful dealer.

Forest River uses Dometic toppers, wouldn't own a unit without being now I have them. I can't see how it could void any warranty. Unless you are real handy I would have a dealer do it, or go to Goshen call FR and set a date for them to install while you are there. I have already set my appointment while there for a 4 point level system at the factory.

If you want to shop it...give Norman's Campers a call...located on the NW side of Atlanta, also a small Forest River Dealer.

i don't think you have much to worry about, since there are only two companies that make them, Dometic and Carefree of Colorado.
i think Carefree is considered slightly better.

That's the kind of advise I was looking for. Thanks! I'll look at Carefree, but won't sweat it if Dometic is easier to get my hands on.
I get what you other guys are saying about warranty issues... but I ain't afraid

Was looking for this same info for our 2015 Crusader and think I'll chat with our dealer about it. Thanks to everyone who posted.
