Why not just take the filter out, put the canister back on and forget it?
I was thinking the same thing, why go through all the trouble of fittings and crimping with the possibility of leak occurring and it becoming a pita. Also later if you decide you would like a filter system it's already there!

Plus you can get cheap filters at Lowes/HD that will filter just as good.
