Up here in the Pacific Northwest we were blessed with nice soft water. Very little mineral content so we could get away with using tap or well water in batteries and radiators without issues.
When I traveled to other parts of the country, namely the Midwest, the water was so hard you could almost chew it.
Try to get a good lather with your shower soap or shampoo and it was impossible.
Now, our local water utility purposely adds minerals to the water system to make it hard. It protects their pipelines, valves, and other machinery. Not enough to eventually block the pipes though, just add hardness "grains".
