An old trick used by auto/truck body repairmen: Make sure the gasket and sealing surface are clean, hold a dollar bill and place where the gasket meets the sealing surface anywhere along the gasket/sealing surface, close the compartment door and hold snug while trying to pull the dollar bill out. Do this at various places along the gasket/sealing surface. IF the bill comes out relatively easy at any place then the gasket and sealing surface are not mating properly. Body shops used to have, and may still be using this, what they called a "shim gasket", maybe 1/8" thick. They would remove the gasket in question, clean the surface, apply the thin gasket first then the appropriate gasket on top of the shim gasket. Of course this would create a tighter sealing surface.
