Batteries

Anyone convert over to lithium ion batteries? I am considering dumping my wet cells and going with a high tech lipo battery. It cuts hundreds of pounds of weight, frees up space, requires no maintenance, should last 5000 charge cycles (over 10 years), can be discharged to flat empty without damage, maintains full voltage until empty. It will require a different converter/charger. A simple $5000 battery should give me way more watt hours than I have now from my 4 wet cells.

Good stuff isn't cheap. It's costing me $15000 to upgrade my golf cart to lipo batteries. I will get 200 mile range and freeway speeds.

Your gonna need to swap the tires as well, pretty sure "freeway speeds" will be exceeding the cart tires yours has.

Be sure to have them balanced and inflated to the correct PSI.

Look, all about the money; money, money! Tesla IS coming out with a new lesser priced car. At the SAME TIME, announced charging stations WILL now increase FEES.

All of this untested over time NEW CRAP isn't really all that great now, is it?! Ask SAMSUNG.

You don't need "batteries" to make golf carts fly. It's been done before with combustion engines.

Who will INSURE YOUR NEW RIDE? Wait till a teen gets it and has a wreck and people are injured or worse. Really?! If you survive the financial suits, and the divorces, GO FOR IT!

If SAMSUNG cannot even get through a teeenie weenie cell phone battery, well, we all wish you the best. Can't wait to see your cart on the news on the Salt Flats ( only legal place you will be driving it)

Now back to lithium batteries. Heck, we can't have confidence in these mass manufactured rv's now. Let's add the FIRE possibility to make us all VERY COMFORTABLE......

"Flat empty", not really, but way deeper that flooded. FLA is happy taking it down to 50% while LFP is okay down to 20%, but down to 0% can kill the pack.

Fire isn't a big danger with LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate aka LFP aka LiFePO4) the "dangerous" kind is a completely different chemical blend type of Li battery.

I appreciate new technology, even if its not for me, and it does have its place. For most of us, its all about the UP FRONT $$$. Take a gander at this:

How many batteries are you putting in, you should be able to get quite a few in the original space.

People have had doubts about new technology forever.
Folks laughed at putting men on the moon and kids never believed we'd have a real "Dick Tracy" type watch we could talk into but both (and lots of other stuff) are a reality in today's world.

Lithium technology is evolving quickly.
I say go for it. If someone doesn't try it, how will we ever know?

Yes, Samsung had some problems with the battery specific to the Note7 but they (and thousands of other manufacturers) have successfully manufactured millions of devices which use lithium technology. They don't all catch fire and they don't all blow up.

I'm willing to bet dollars to doughnuts that you have (and use) several of these things in your day to day life.

Thanks, that's a nice read. I would love to go Lithium and solar but $$$ are too high for me. I was thinking about this the other day and was wondering why no one has a Tesla Powerwall in a RV and that read explains some of the issues with using one in an RV.

I would love to swap to LiFePO4 batteries but for me the $ cost is still too high. Maybe in a few more years after the prices drop.

My daily driver vehicle is a plug in electric. I refer to it as my "golf cart" but it's really only a golf cart electrically. Best speed is 45. Best range is 50 miles. All using wet cells. With lithium it opens a whole new level. I have full insurance coverage for $100 a year. I have $5000 invested.
