Cabinet quality

The other day during a stopover on our commute from Houston to Dayton Ohio, the DW said “the sub woofer looks out of level”.

An odd statement from the DW.

Sure enough the #20 subwoofer I installed in a cabinet near the tv was at a 20 degree angle.

So out it came.

The dear boys at Cedar Creek had installed the shelf board on 3/4” rails in the cabinet.

One screw into the rail and into the luan walls to hold it. So yes, no glue, they fell from the walls when we hit rough pavement.

And the speaker was pretty much on the floor of the cabinet. Crap construction easily fixed, but.

The speaker had 4 3” feet on it. Golly, they made holes in the shelf! Holes.

Need a new shelf.

Going to get the screw gun out and reinforce every shelf. No more heavy objects in the cabinets!

The joys of rv ownership. Love our fiver.

Spent four weeks in hot Houston doing new grandson duty. Better than bunking with the kids. We could go home to peace and quiet.

Our electric bill was $250 for 29 days. The ac got a workout.

Yep, as you said, welcome to the joys of new RV ownership. I think most of us spend every trip of the first year either fixing or upgrading all the little things to actually finish the build
What struck me was the $250 for a month of metered electric. Ouch! We stay in the Tucson/Phoenix area on monthly rates sometimes during the hot months (also for kids and grandkids) and our electric rates are no where near that. I can't find the receipt for our last trip right now, but it seems like it was about half that.
Congrats on the new RV and grandson!! I'm assuming the RV is new anyway.

Probably get better quality cabinets from Costco, Sams Club.

We had an overhead cabinet separate from the ceiling. That repair was great fun!

While owning the fiver for over a year we have put 8,000 miles or so on it.

We are discovering the quality thing.

Inexpensive rv’s are a choice, however the more miles the worse. The issues.

Fivers start at $30k and go up to well over $100k.

How many miles you plan on moving a year matters. Too many choices!

I am glad we took a year and a half to buy our first fiver a CC Hathaway.

Electricity was expensive in Houston. 1821 at $.14 or about $250.

At Forest River and others; "cabinet quality" is an oxymoron.

I usually go through all my new cabinets with construction adhesive at all the joints or support points. It will seep into the gaps and clue up solid once cured. Seems to work, haven't had a cabinet come apart in 20 years.

Very true. I think this is a point overlooked by many who buy RV's today.

They want lighter and less expensive units but fail to take into consideration how both of those goals are achieved in a factory.

You get Luan instead of cabinet grade particle board/plywood. Cabinet framing is not like what you get in a stick and brick home. The cabinets in my house can support all kinds of weight inside and also hold up when three of my grand kids jump up and sit on the counter the cabinets support. Wall mounted cabinets are made from 3/4" high density particle board and each weighs the figurative "ton".

If a trailer was built like that I'd need an MDT tow vehicle to haul it around instead of my Titan.

If someone wants cabinetry that is more like what they find at home perhaps an Airstream would be more suitable. Just be prepared to pay the price and tow the weight.
