Fastening Hardware on the Steps
Has anyone seen this rivet fail? Just got back from a trip in our 2013 34 RLSA, and found the rivet on the right side of the steps missing. Put a temporary fix on it, but it's not the correct one.

A bolt of the same size with two washers and a nylon nut should hold just as well.

Lippert uses cheap-ass aluminum rivets that shear off at the scissor. I was carrying a case of wine up the steps and on the way back down empty handed the top step let go. I'm 6'4 and 260 lbs. If I was carrying that case and it broke I would have gotten perty banged up. I drilled out and replaced all the junk with Grade 8 bolts, washers and nylock nuts. No more issues.

Replaced it with 1/4-20 stainless hardware with a self-locking nut. Seems to be doing the job! Thanks for the input.

If you haven't done so....replace them all. They will all shear off at some point.

I agree with rattleNsmoke. I replaced all of mine with grade 8 bolts and nylon lock nuts.

Put it on your list of fixes for Goshen, perhaps you'll get a new set of steps.

I noticed that the left side was also about to let go. They look like aluminum pop rivets. Not what I would use.....

When you go up to the service center they usually ask if you have any changes, I would at least mention it then. I consider this to be a safety item.
Last year I played the age card to get them to fix something extra on my rig.

X2. Depending on the grade of stainless steel used, they will be either too soft or too brittle. Not what you want to use for steps that will be constantly bearing weight.
Use either grade 5 (good) or grade 8 (best), and you'll never have another problem.

I have the same year and model Cedar Creek and had the same problem while it was under the original warranty. They repaired it it with grade 8 bolts but I believe they went to a 5/8 size bolt. I have since replaced the steps with a four step unit, much better built imo.

Not exactly sure which rivets your talking about? Are the 3 and 4 step units different?

The four step is just easier to climb, don't have to take as big a step. I think the one I installed is just better made and rated for more weight.

Replaced all the rivets on the steps with Gr 8 bolts washers and nyloc nuts as OC recommends, about a $3.00 investment in safety. Glad I did it when I did as two of the rivets were very loose. I used a cold chisel tool and hammer to knock the ends off and the rivets fell off. Check all the bolts and screws holding the steps to the trailer, several of mine were not tight at all.
