Grease/lube King Pin
Seeing mixed feedback on Al's Internet whether to lubricate the King Pin (not the plate). For the plate I use lube plate. So looking to see who lubricates the pin itself and if so, with what. And for those that don't, what kind of wear are you seeing.

I use grease and no lube plate. The tolerances are too tight for that on my Reese Elite and Reese Sidewinder. I like grease, change the grease cleaning it off a couple times a season, Grease allows My hitch to slide right in and locks clean every time.

I use the plate. I don't love it. I notice it wears the paint off the top of my hitch...which is going to happen anyway. So I have to fix that every year. It's time for a new one(plate) and I've been thinking of throwing it out and going back to grease.

My experiences as well. (although I have a B&W and don't utilize the Revolution)
I use Fluid Film on both the plate and pin.

To answer the OP’s question on lubing the KING PIN I found it not necessary. I have pulled my 5ver almost 5 years now and I never greased the king pin and saw no reason to.
I now have an Andersen and no, I am not going to grease the ball or the ball socket...

i use a teflon lube plate between the face of the hitch and the bottom of the pin box. plus i also keep a thin layer of regular grease on the king pin itself where the hitch jaws grab it. also there are a couple of zerk fittings in the hitch itself (curt Q20) that get some grease.

I am old school and I do not like metal on metal wearing as this joint works. So, yes, I grease the king pin were the jaws of the hitch contact the metal of the king pin. A little bit of grease has never hurt anything in this area, and it only takes a minute or so to add.

We have many trailers and trucks with all kinds of hitches on the farm. Mainly gooseneck though. We have never greased any of them. There is so much dust that you would have to clean and re-grease every time you hooked up to avoid creating sand paper.
I have never greased the plate or kingpin on any of my fifth wheels. I did use a Teflon plate a few times (until they fell apart). My standard Reese hitch is at least 20 years old and has been in 5 trucks. Plate is shiny, but has no undo wear. Now that I use a Sidewinder on the trailer side, there is definitely no need to apply grease.
I do apply what ever spray lubricant I have handy (usually dry lube or silicone) to the leading edge of the hitch plates and the side of the Sidewinder locking wedge to facilitate sliding up and into the truck hitch.
I do have several friends that use grease religiously. The only difference I see is that they are constantly getting grease on their clothing

On my B&W, it recommends putting some grease on the inside of the hitch jaws instead of applying it directly to the king pin.

I use the teflon plate and a little grease around the pin. I was always told unless you change the grease after every trip you run the risk of dirt, sand, and other contaminants get stuck in there and create a sanding situation on your hitch components

Yep ... I just spray a little white lithium grease on the jaws ....

I am one who does use grease on the king pin. When we are ready to go, I put on my vinyl gloves, grab a paper towel and wipe out the old grease. I than will reapply with new wheel bearing grease that I keep on board in my storage compartment. Any type of lubricant will retain grit if exposed to the air so, if you use a lubricant clean the surface before each trip. This only adds a minute or so, to my procedure in prepping for travel.
