Congrats on your retirement and trip.
Why are you thinking of removing the batteries to load test them? Safety? Room for the clamps?
I had a hard time getting the last battery into that compartment, because it it so tight. I would like to avoid doing it any more than necessary.
To reduce the chance of my arm accidentally touching a NEG terminal while my hand is touching a POS terminal, I installed Battery Terminal Boots on three of the NEG terminals.
I used "Marine Battery Terminal Boot Fits 2 AWG to 2/0 AWG - Black" SKU 457N3V14 from Marine Wiring, Boat Cable and Electrical Genuinedealz.com
Here is the link > Marine Battery Terminal Boot fits 2 AWG to 2/0 AWG - Black Genuinedealz.com
Edit: Here is a link to a bigger picture of the picture below. I couldn't figure out how to make it clickable to be bigger. http://www.forestriverforums.com/Pho...8&ppuser=20684

My batteries look just like racer4's, same unit too. But mine are black.
If the Lord lets me live and I can save a SS check or two, I'm going to have a custom cutout and bigger door in that compartment and put in a MorRyde sliding tray, so I can get to those danged stuff-in batteries!!!! What a terrible design.

I just removed them. It’s 7 degrees here, I want them at room temp before I tested them and to top them off before we leave next week.
I checked each battery, 6.29, 6.27, 6.28 and 6.28 with a volts meter.
I then used a load tester, all tested in the green.
Before I removed the batteries, I turned on the inverter. Started at 12.2 volts then in about 30 seconds it went down to 11.2 on the inverter display. The manual said it will auto shutdown below 11 volts.
Maybe I have a loose connection to track down ( in warmer weather). I’m topping off the batteries anyway.
Agree it’s a tight fit, mine require no battery straps, no place for them to go.

Checking Battery Status You can check the battery status by pressing the Select button until the Input Voltage LED illuminates. The battery voltage appears in the threedigit LED display. The normal operating battery voltage range is between 11 and 15 volts.
Checking Output Power You can check how much power the XM 1800 is supplying to the connected loads by pressing the Select button until the Output Power LED illuminates.
Turning the Inverter On and Off The on/off button on the remote panel turns the XM 1800 on and off. When the XM 1800 is on and shore power is present, the incoming shore power is passed to the output to power appliances connected to the XM 1800, and the inverter draws minimal power from the battery. The status LED glows green. If the shore power goes away, the transfer switch automatically transfers the appliances to inverter power. The status LED glows yellow to indicate the XM 1800 is using the battery to power the appliances. When the XM 1800 is turned off, the inverter is disabled. Incoming shore power is passed to the output to power appliances. If the shore power goes away, the appliances do not transfer to inverter power.

How about using 2 12 volt batteries. Wondering if 2 would do the job?

In post #21, there is a picture of my Trojan HydroLink Watering System. It is very similar to Flow-Rite. Trojan uses different battery caps. The rest appears to be Flow-Rite parts. For a larger picture, click the link I included, then click the next picture and the picture will be bigger than your display.
I would call it semi-automatic. It comes with a manual pump. One end goes into a gallon of distilled water, and the other end connects to the watering system. Pump it until resistance is felt. A float valve in the battery caps closes when the battery is full. Very quick and easy.
I thought is was necessary with the small amount of room above the batteries.
