I have a similar unit and had the same issue. I tried everything. Finally learned that the easiest way is to spray that middle rod at the base with WD40 SILICONE BASED. Once out, spray threads and rod threads. Once this is done, you can easily finger install the rod to your desired length by simply reversing your take out.
Some of these other Cedar Creek units have more room to work with.
