Water leaking from pump when on City water

On my last trip I noticed water dripping from under the from left side of the underbelly I found that the water was coming from the screen assembly on the water pump. The plastic "sight glass" was broken which is an easy repair. But I'm wondering why the water would be coming through the water pump if I have my valve on City.

I called Camping World and a service person said the water pump is letting water leak through when on City and needs to be replaced. That too is easy fix and not a lot of money but just seem odd to me.

Wouldn't the water be closed off from the pump in the City position??

The water pump outlet and the city water inlet are actually 'Tee'd' into each other. Since they feed the same water system throughout the RV, it's easier (and cheaper) for the mfg's to just use the pumps check valve to prevent back flow through the pump.

Here's a generic plumbing diagram of how most RV's are plumbed.

OK well that makes sense and the Guy at Camping World is most likely correct on the pump leaking.

Thanks for the reply and picture.

So now it occurred to me that I'm not sure I understand the "City/Gravity" valve next to where I connect the hose from the city. Is that just so I can fill the fresh water tank?

Sorry, not real up on the use of the fresh water tank, need to work on that.

If it says gravity, then yes, that's where you fill the fresh water tank.

This is the port for filling your fresh water tank with a hose.. Confusing, I agree..

It wasn't a check valve per se, but a shutoff valve to close the line to the freshwater tank in case if when hooked up to city it would leak enough to fill the FW tank.

When we were at the rally last year my FW tank filled up and started overflowing onto the ground. I think it may been because I failed to completely have the lever all the way to the city position.

Haven't had to use it yet, but is there just in case.

Does anyone have a link to a shutoff valve?

My unit is in storage, sorry I can't take a look at it nor do I have a picture of it. From what I remember on what Orvan installed for me was a simple ball valve. I googled online and came up with this from Home Depot which I think is close to what I have.

Hope this helps.
