A/C While Driving

Another rookie question: we are about to embark on a trip out west and the weather forecast is hot! While driving can we run our roof-top AC without the generator running? We have a 2021 Coachmen Mirada Class A. The dash AC doesn't seem sufficiently cool to keep the coach cool enough. Thanks for your advice!

you will have to run the generator to run the roof top AC. however this is totally acceptable and very common as the dash ac wont keep the whole unit cool..

this is why some units have curtains behind the seats so if only 2 people are travelling you can use the dash ac.

Something to remember when running the generator and traveling down the road. don't let your fuel get below 1/4 tank or your generator will shut down. Most rigs the generator fuel stand pipe is set at about that level.

There is nothing wrong with running your generator while traveling to use your AC. In fact it will really benefit you when you stop for the night being you won’t have to catch up with the heat. You will lose some mpg, but I have calculated that it’s really only about 1/2 to 3/4 a gal that it will use per hour of use. Now saying that mine is a 4000 generator. I do it all the time, driving you can hardly hear it running. But it makes a huge difference keeping up with the heat. But as mentioned just make sure you don’t go below 1/4 tank of gas.

Totally agree with the above replies. We had a Class C and it was easier for the AC to keep up but we still would run the AC with the generator. We are heading to Florida (super hot) and we'll be using our AC while driving all the way there.

In my Super C I never needed to run the genny and coach AC. When we switched to a Class A, we had to run the generator and the AC units.

Do it all the time, including right now as we move from Texas to Tennessee for the second half of our summer trip. We also boondock at Cracker Barrel and run it all night as we sleep.

All part of why we own motor homes!

And we have a 2019 Mirada 35bhs. LOVE IT and welcome to the family, Domer!
