Ford 450 V issues?

We are contemplating purchasing a used Coachman Class C with a Ford 450 V10 engine. We would like any feed back on this engine. Good and especially bad or not happy issues with it.

Your question is very hard to answer if you don't include a year model of the engine. The V10 has been around for a long time and gone thru many changes.

The modern V-10 is a great engine. In recent years Ford decided to save $20 and leave the idler pulley off the right side of the motor. It causes belt vibration at certain RPMs and premature wear on the alternator pulley. It can be added on for about $30 in parts. My V-10 is nice and quiet now, still gets lousy gas mileage but even in a pickup the V-10 is a 10 mpg motor.

My 2019 V-10 engine had a horrible squeal right at 2000 RPM; it was quiet at 1900 and 2100 RPM. Having read about this problem, I took it to a Ford dealer and told them what I had read. They disregarded what I told them, and replaced the water pump instead. The very next day, the squeal resurfaced. Back to Ford. This time they installed the idler pulley, and I never had another squeal for 10K more miles, and it was still quiet when I traded it in.

My 2009 has been great. I use exactly the oil recommended (0 W whatever Motorcraft synthetic blend from Walmart) and change it every 5000 miles or once per year. Usually that works out to just before our annual summer out west. If we meander too far I will go to a shop and have it changed but I will provide my own oil if they don't have what I want. I was doing this at Walmart but I understand that they don't want to do large vehicles anymore. I have one of those valves on my oil drain and shops don't like them because they are too slow. But they just grumble and go do something else while it drains.
If you haven't yet purchased the rig I would highly recommend taking it to a mechanic with a high end scan tool and have it checked out. You will have to pay for this service but if he finds the catalytic converter is clogged or the fuel injectors are bad it will save thousands in repairs. If the seller says no to this then walk away.

My GT in my signature had the class A V10 which is a different engine than what's in the class C rigs, which I believe was a different engine than what was in Ford pick-ups.

Anyways, my experience with the engine was excellent! I thought it was an incredible motor that pulled our 18K lb. motorhome and another 4500 lbs. of dolly and car up 9% grades around Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills of So. Dakota. Truly amazed. For a 3500 mile trip loaded with three weeks of provisions and said tow I averaged 6.87 MPG which again all things considered was very good mpg.

Older V10's had problems with spark plugs seizing into the socket but all my rigs engine cost me was about $50 a year for an oil change which I did myself using 5W20 recommended synthetic blend and a quality filter.

Know for problems with stripped threads for the spark plugs since Ford chose to cut corners and not install stainless steel thread inserts.

I worked for the other blue logo auto company in Michigan. The Ford V10 is a solid engine over the years. It should manage well over 100k miles with regular maintenance. The older 5 speed transmission (5R110W) was also rock solid. The combination will not get great gas milage. My 2006 26' Lexington gets about 9mpg

V10 Ford

Very good engine. AS someone else mentioned the spark plugs can be a problem getting out. Ford tried a 3 piece spark plug in the early engines which tend to seize and brake on removal-PIA. It is a very durable engine. I would figure the price of changing out spark plugs in the price.

I have 2 V10's A 2000 F250 and 1016 Forester. Both engines have been great. The F250 required an emission sensor replacement around 2003 which was covered under the emissions warranty and now has a temperamental starter relay. Other then that, no problems ever even after almost 22 years of ownership

We have had two V10s. A 2006 Chateau 31-P and a 2015 3170DS. Both were fantastic. More than enough power, smooth, reliable and relatively quiet. The only complaint is poor mileage, but we didn’t buy a motorhome for good gas mileage. I’d recommend a V10. Our new Georgetown has the V8, but we only have put 60 miles on it, so I can’t provide an assessment on that one.

I have a 2002 F-250 with a V10 and 125,000 miles (most of which were driven while heavily loaded and/or towing). It blew two spark plugs out at different times, so I installed the steel inserts in all ten holes. Other than that, it has been 100% trouble-free. It has plenty of power, in my opinion, but does not even come close to the 7.3 gas V8 in my current Sunseeker. I would recommend the V8 over the V10, if at all possible.

What year of Coachman will determine which generation of Triton V10.

Basically they are faultless with regular oil changes.

I’ve had two versions of the V10…..no problems.

I have the check engine light come on. Tech said it’s random miss fire and common to the V10. Other than that it’s an OK engine. 8 to 9 mpg.

2013 engine and 2014 coach - absolutely no issues with the motor.

Annual oil changes.

Added the 5 star tuner and it performs better in the mountains now and added about 10% gas mileage. Get about 8 in the mountains pulling or toad.

The 5 star did quiet it down as well with the shift points getting changed.
