Mystery Switch - RD385DS

I have a mystery electrical switch in my 2012 Coachmen Sportscoach RD385DS Bunkhouse. The Factory thought it might be an outside step switch, but nothing comes on when it is selected. It is located at the end of the kitchen cabinet, next to one of the couches. It is the "single switch" next to the double switches that control overhead lights... Anyone have a guess?

does it have two positions - staying up or down...

or is it a 'momentary' - where a push up or down brings it back to the middle?

is it located next to the entry way?

Normally single switches by themselves control tank heaters.

I can't fathom why the mfg's can't do a simple thing like label switches!

agreed...

I've delivered many brand new diesel and gas coaches from the factories to dealers all over, and am always amazed at how such a simple 'label' can be so hard for the manufacturers to pull off - as though everyone who walks in the coach for the first time immediately 'knows' what every little switch might be for...

and don't get me started on the switches you can't even FIND in the coach!!
I delivered one over a two day run from N Indiana to S Florida and NEVER found the light switch for the rear closet - the lights were on when I picked it up, and they were still on when I delivered it - ridiculous!

Thanks for the comments. I totally agree that the manufacturer should label switches or give you a manual that tells what each does. The factory response to my questions about this switch was to attach an electrical schematic to their answer. Don't know about you, but my capability to read schematics is a little limited. The switch can be set in either direction and it is at the end of the kitchen sink cabinets, next to the LR couch...

not sure if i understand, does the switch STAY in one position, either up or down?

we're not familiar with your coach, or layout - WHERE is this switch in relation to your entry door? Does your entry door already have other switches right next to the entry?

Exclamation

it sounds more than likely that this is the entry STEP switch:

UP means that the steps STAY deployed, even when the engine/ignition is Off...

DOWN means that it will deploy or retract EVERY time you open the screen/.door...

Okay.... I will check that out.... Don't know why this switch would be put at the end of the kitchen counter and not near the entry....

More investigation. First... It is not the "step" switch... That is located at the door, where it belongs. Second... The switch is on a 12V circuit and it has power. It is a simple "on" "off" switch. Third... There is a light, under the steps, that is not coming on with any switch. Thought it would come on with the "patio" switch, but no... I pulled the bulb and it is good. I do not see any switches on the dash that would control courtesy lights. That's where it stands now...

I appreciate the responses, but I have answered this question twice. First in the initial post, and then again when it was asked.

It is located at the end of the kitchen counter cabinets. It is on the side of the cabinet next to a LR couch... Maybe I don't understand what the question is???

Most of us have never been inside a unit like yours. We don't know where your kitchen cabinets are relative to your entry door... nor do we know where your couch is relative to your entry door. I wish I comprehended your floor plan but I don't. Sorry.

SEARCH Feature

I'm going to make a general comment here that I'm sure some will not take in the grain it is offered in.

The SEARCH feature on this forum and on IRV2 is not easy to use. I've already tried the SEARCH feature many times and it rarely comes up with what I'm searching for.

Maybe a quick "HOW TO SEARCH" article should be incorporated into this feature. Could be I just don't know how it works, but it is not that helpful when I have tried it...

RJOL, have you looked inside your outside storage compartments to determine if that mystery switch might control a compartment light?

New forum member as of today🙂

I'd look up inside that cabinet and see if it is wired to something. Maybe trace where the wire goes. Usually you don't see a switch installed unless it is for something. But hey, RV'ing is and adventure and a learning experience. You didn't think they'd tell you everything did you? LOL

Here's your answer- when you put it in the UP position, it signals someone (like DW) to fetch you another beer.

Then if she puts it in the DOWN position, it activates the ejection seat under you.
