Anyone replaced the king bed w a queen to get some room on each side?

We replaced our bed with a king size IKEA memory foam mattress, but then cut down the sides to match the bed platform exactly. Found that conventional mattress sizes are all either too long or too short. Took me less than 30 minutes to do. So much better.

What did you use to cut the foam with? I read one post that an electric carving knife works really well.
