Can the slide topper damage the slide wall during high wind?

Had a couple of storms over the past couple of nights that had very high gusts of winds to where the long slide's topper kept slamming against the support (picture attached) piece in the middle.

No apparent damage so far, but it was very loud and felt throughout the entire RV (especially if sitting in the slide itself). Part of me wanted the topper to rip in half so that it would stop (which it did eventually).

Highly unlikely. I am on my third 5ER and they all had/have slide toppers. I would not own a RV without slide toppers as they keep the debris and water off of the roof. Thus keeping the inside of the trailer dry when the slides are brought in.

If your topper flaps in the wind I would put something under the slide topper to keep it tight. Like a beach ball or some other item to raise up the topper. Just remember to remove the item before bringing in the slide.

Slide topper "billowing" is something that we all have lived with sometime in our RV'ing lifestyle. The wind gets under the topper and "unwinds" the topper against the spring in the roller. When the wind subsides or stops, the roller spring re-winds the topper onto the roller forcefully! This causes some disconserting noises and shaking of the RV. Our 8 year old RV has been through several tropical storms & a Cat 1 hurricane with no damage to the toppers or the side of the RV. That's just our experience & your results depending on direction and wind force may differ.
