Ive done I40 both East & West with my FR3 33DS in April 2020.

Hwy 40 is more than adequate to handle your 30DS. Easy ride. Now if snowing, park it, wait for a clear road. 7 Miles East of Albuquerque New Mexico was the only place I encounter a freak snowstorm. So I headed back to Albuquerque for the night.

As for I-17 in Arizona, concern would be to watch the weather. it can snow on any of those roads also including i-40 and i-17

I have not driven I-17 so Arizona experts here would be best to listen to.

We just traveled I-17 south out of Flagstaff. The inclines aren’t bad, just keep your speed down coming down some of the 5% and 6% grades. The road just south of Flagstaff is very rough in an FR3 and feels like you are driving on railroad ties. Safe travels!

Thank you very much for all your feedback on this topic. I feel like if we can travel some of Maine roads out west can't be as bad lol

Hi we have made the trip from Illinois to the Phoenix valley many times and taken several ways. 40 is no problem and it is a very pretty drive from Albuquerque. 17 south from Flagstaff will have 6% grades at times but take your time and you will be fine. My absolute favorite is to come down 87. You can take 387 off 40 and come in through Heber to Payson and down into Mesa. Beautiful views all the way!
