NPS generator problem

Hi, new here. Anyone had their NPS generator quit running after 10 minutes? Repeatable on the road or parked. After a "cool down" will run again for 10 minutes. NPS says it is a FR problem. FR says they are working on it. All I know is it is frustrating! Thanks SGJ

Sure sounds like a cooling air problem. Not enough getting in most likely.

What year is your FR3? Does your Generator bay door have a vent in it?

Check out this thread. We (as in FR3 owners) were having the same problem as you described in earlier rigs. This was the fix for the generator over heating and shutting down till it cooled off. Hope this is the fix you need.

Let us know. Thank you and good luck.

Ours will sometimes stop working very quickly. Other times, it'll last several hours without any problems, but that's while driving. If we stop for enough time, it'll eventually sputter wildly and then stop. There have also been times where we're stationary for a few hours and it seems to work fine. So, hit or miss...

NPS claims it's an issue with there not being enough fuel being delivered to the generator's fuel pump and they're working with FR to figure it out.

Thanks for the reply. We haven't ran the genset going down the road but plan to test it on a trip next week. Jared at NPS has been helpful but yes, they believe it is a fuel delivery problem. Nicholas at FR basically says "working on it". So, here we sit in it! All we want it to run an AC and cook a pizza roll going down the highway!

Thumbs up

Update: FR is meeting with NPS today. Might be a solution to the problem. We will see.

I have the same issue, have been in contact with FR and NPS. NPS sent a team to the factory to figure it out, as of yesterday I was told a solution is in the works. My 2021 has been in the shop over a month waiting for a fix. I was told there are thousands of people having the same issue. I don’t know what the solution is yet, hopefully will find out soon. I have a 2021 34DS.

Glad to hear from somebody in the same boat. Same rig here, same age. I heard the same thing. Also, we are not alone. Hope they solve it. Another thing, our nearest FR dealer is Rockport. Nobody is certified yet to work on that generator in the FR 3 or Georgetown because it is so new, they say. Let me know if you get a solution.

Heat issues

I will probably install an after market vent in the door when I get it back. I put a high/low thermometer inside the compartment when I was having all the issues and the high temp registered 135 degrees. That canít be good. Reading past posts it looks like several people installed the vents and had good results. I would have thought that FR would do that themselves.

Yes a vent might work. It looked like most of those were Onan. I bet they recommend fuel pump replacement and an auxillary pump, much like the one I saw on a previous post. Jared at NPS sorta agreed.

Spoke with Jared at NPS, solution to fuel issue has been resolved, he is shipping parts to our dealer for Monday delivery! Finally, we have been at the dealer waiting on a solution for six weeks. I don’t know what the parts are, should find out next week.

I was told that the solution is to use a fancier fuel pump.

Any idea how we can get our hands on one?

I'm getting mailed one directly. You'll have to get in touch with NPS to try and get one.

Thanks for the quick reply. I just emailed Jared. Can you post some pictures when you receive yours? Are you doing the install yourself? I've put fuel pumps on old ONAN generators before. Kinda wondering how hidden this one is and if it's a pain to get to.

Thanks!

When I had my original problem I was in Utah on a trip from Texas. Jared sent me a replacement fuel pump that we installed at the campground. Not too difficult. Still didnít solve the problem, but I was impressed with NPS. I just wonder how many FR3s are being sold now with defective parts?

I was told that the new engine in the V8 chassis creates a vapor lock and prevents enough fuel from getting to the generator's pump. Who knows what would be required from Ford to resolve this, so the solution, supposedly, is a fancier fuel pump.

The one that you (and I) were sent was a replacement of the original, so it wouldn't have solved it anyway. It would've just provided a temporary backup should the original have burned up.

Hopefully, this fancier pump will do the trick.
