water heater-gas and electric
My 2016 FR3 28DS has a gas and electric water heater. Can I use both the gas and electric at the same time?

You'll get faster recovery if you use both, at the same time.

When we get to our site we use both to get the water hot. Once the gas side shuts down we leave the electric side on to keep the water hot.

Yes, you can use both. However, when I'm traveling in the Summer and use my generator to run the rooftop AC, I turn off the electric. It seems that when I have the water heater electric on with the generator running, and I have the AC running, sometimes it pops the breaker on the generator. Once I get to the campground, I turn the electric back on.

Interesting. I thought the water heater worked off one or the other. Obviously, I was incorrect. How do you turn the electric water heating on/off?

That's true for many/most refrigerators but not water heaters. IF your heater is made by Suburban, there is a little black switch outside behind the WH door and on the lower left corner of the face of the WH. IF your heater is made by Atwood, you MAY have the electric element switch on your control panel - possibly near your water pump switch.

switch should be on the control panel of your unit or on the water heater itself depending on the make/model. (behind the acess panel outside)

I don't use any circuit breaker as a switch. Some do; I don't.

We just got a new fr3 30ds. The dealer had some water in the fresh water tank. We took the camper out for a test run. At the campground we only plugged in the electric and didn’t connect the water. We ONLY turned the water pump. I was surprised later to find that I had hot water. How did that happen if I didn’t turn it on.

In many units, the propane side of the WH is controlled by a switch inside the unit. The electric side of the WH is controlled by a switch on the WH which is accessed by opening the outside access panel. Look in lower left hand side of the outside of the WH for a black rocker switch.

Hot water heater gas/electric switch
The gas and or electric switch for my hot water heater is on the side of the bathroom sink cabinet. Actually it's a double switch, one for electric, one for gas, can turn both on or off. A horrible place for that switch. If given the chance, my two year old granddaughter uses it for a piano.

Howdy Bkbert, and welcome to the forums. More likely than not, you may have a Suburban water heater that has an electric heating element and can also be powered by propane. It sounds like the electric heating element is on...which has a separate switch that is located on the face of the water heater.
Here is a link to a thread of helpful hints to new RV owners. Included in the thread, is a link to Suburban water heaters, and the operation thereof.... including where this electric heating element switch is located so you can turn it off.

Hope it helps
