Entry Door Strut

When we bought our pre-owned Legacy, there was no strut on the entry door. I didn’t know there was supposed to be one until a couple of years later. By then, I had installed a small magnetic catch that held the door open. I’d like to replace the strut and I ordered one from FR parts. Can anyone tell me which way it is installed? Fat end, or barrel, towards the Coach side or the door?

I’ll go out today to take a pic of mine. I’d like to know about your magnet set up. Does the door swing all the way open? I think I would like that a little better.

Fat side goes to the RV. It attaches 19” on the door. Click image for larger version

funny, I removed ours early on, not liking the strict position of the door, not being able to be opened 'all the way', or remain out of the way when parked. I added a simple rv door catch, and haven't missed it since.

Yes, swings all the way open. In fact, I removed the knob from one of the windows behind the sofa so that the window can’t be opened and we accidentally break the glass. The magnetic catch is just a common one at camping supply places.

I agree and don’t think I’ll have the strut on here long. Problem is, my entry door lock unit failed and I replaced it with a combination unit. I don’t like the fit or look of this one and am still looking for a better looking unit. In the meantime, I need to protect the side of the coach as this new lock is thicker than the OEM lock and it hits the side instead of the magnetic catch.

I see a pic already posted of the fat part of the strut towards the coach. Those struts are very common at most RV stores and fit many different rigs. They are made to break of the wind catches the door and rips them off. I carry a couple spares just in case. I have not put a latch on like yours, but though about it. I'm the type that opens my bay doors frequently so I decided to leave the strut.

Hmmm, “common at most RV stores” and you carry a couple of spares. Guessing I shouldn’t order any more from FR at $50 ea? Uggg

Have you installed it? My concern with buying a generic is the close tolerances of that door frame. Thought maybe that’s why mine was missing from the door when I bought the Coach and there is some damage there.

Yeah I’ve installed it and it works great. Just be careful in the wind. I suspect the wind catching the door is what has broken most of these.
