Fluctuating oil pressure gauge

Is it normal for the oil pressure guage to fluctuate while driving? It goes to the halfway mark when driving and drops down to about a quarter when stopped. Never noticed this until I got my first oil change......

Yes this is normal. The oil pump is gear driven so more rpms more psi.

Fluctuating oil pressure guage

On my old Cummins the older the oil change is the more the gauge drops...change the oil and its back up.

I was told by a HD/MD truck mechanic that on a 6BT Cummins the pressure was not what the oil system controlled. It was mostly volume on that engine and the gauge with pressure on it just gave you something to look at.

It is most likely a high volume low pressure engine.
