New "confused" owner from Belgium... Which MY did I buy??

Hi Guys and Girls,

Greetings from over the pond in Belgium/Europe ! ! !

Have just bought a 2014-2015-2016 (???) Forest River LEGACY SR 340 BH with the 340HP engine. Bought it in the UK last Friday.

Am a little bit confused as to what MY it is considered to be...

Let me explain:

- On the inside decal in compartment above entree door it says it has the 340HP cummins engine...
- Incomplete manufacture date is april 2014 according to same decal ...
- Paint scheme seems to be from 2016 model not '14 or '15 as far I can tell ...
- Has heated water tank
- On the UK registration it says first registration was 1/1/2016 (I suppose in USA)

Any clues from the experts maybe?

Edited to say: Also has Atwood heater and not Gerard but not sure this was from standard as the cover is painted "grayish", not body color...

Thanks in advance,
F.

likely a 2014 chassis from Freightliner, delivered the factory sometime in the late spring of that year, with a build of a 2015 Model year in late fall, and eventually sold sometime in 2016 - yes, some units sit on lots for over a year or more, not uncommon. My 2014 Palazzo, a sister to your Legacy, was sitting on the lot right next to brand new 2015 models ... and although built in March 2014, some other 2014 models on the same lot were built in late 2013.
RVs are a 'work in progress' as almost NO manufacturers actually produce the WHOLE rv itself, but take a chassis/engine/transmission and add their 'house' on top of it. If you think about it, the engine from Cummins(southern Indiana) could have been built a year or more before installed in the Freightliner chassis(South Carolina), eventually shipped on a truck/trailer to the factory ( N Indiana), to be 'built' into an RV... yes, it takes TIME, and can certainly span several years.

incomplete manufacture date is the date the CHASSIS manufacturer built the unit and ASSIGNED a serial number - such as FREIGHTLINER. They 'start' the VIN NUMBER process, but ultimately the final manufacturer, the RV FACTORY, actually assigns the MODEL YEAR, at their pleasure.

Ok, I see. Thanks for the reply.

But why would it then have a “2016-MY” paint scheme? (As first registration is 1/1/2016)

Or is a mid year 2015 build marketed as a MY 2016?

Also: Do all MY’s come with the DEF/AdBlue?

I know in 17/18 Cedar Creek fifth wheels all had the Gerard heater. Most folks replaced them with anything else. CC stopped making them standard sometime later.

Filos Hippos,
Welcome to the forum and congrats on a nice looking rig. IF you could send me your VIN# via private message and I can see what year your coach is. Also there are actually two separate VIN#s on your coach one is the chassis VIN (4UZxxxx) and the other is the Forest River VIN (4x4xxxx). Hope you are staying safe on the other side of the pond

Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your new rig. I used to live in the tri-border region in NL and have been to Belgium many times.

Safe and happy travels.

It is not uncommon for the manufacturer to start building the following year's models in mid-year. My 2017 5th wheel was actually assembled in April of 2016 (I think it may have been the first 2017 built at that plant.)

So, I can certainly understand your confusion: chassis built by Freightliner in 2014 and sat on Freightliner's lot for a while. Shipped to Forest River, who completed the Legacy MH in spring of 2015, and labeled the build as a 2016 model. Sold to dealer in late spring of 2015, and finally sold to the original RETAIL consumer near the end of 2015 or early 2016, who got his title showing it to be a 2016 model (because that's what Forest River labeled it) in January of 2016.

Confusing? Yes. Uncommon? Nope.

Welcome to the Forums

Mike

I agree to what Capt. Mike and others have said. From the start of the chassis and engine build to the end of the completed motorhome it takes at least 18 months. Though not as extreme as your Legacy, my TT has a build date of 4/11/2013. On the title and running the VIN number it's a 2014 even though we bought it from the dealer at the end of August 2013.

F.

Btw, what would a rig like this one be valued at in USA?

It has 23.000 miles and in very nice but of course not concours condition.

2016 MY and paint scheme.

Bunkbeds and optional bed over front seats.

Pretty standard for the rest I think.

What’s your thoughts?

You can go to RV Trader or NADA to find the value.

Probably up to $120k as a private sale. You can buy a brand new 2018 in Texas at a dealer with warranty for $145k.

OK. I paid around $114k.

But that includes 10% import tax and 21% European VAT.

So buying a brand new one at $145k would be 145x1,1x1,21 = $192.995 not including transport, insurance etc.

So $114k on my doorstep in Europe would mean buying in USA around $85k...

Sounds like you got an excellent deal! Of course we have taxes to be paid here too but they vary by state and aren't as big as VAT.

That's a great looking motorhome. Congratulations!

I have a couple of quick question for you. How easy is it to find campgrounds across Belgium and rest of Europe that can accommodate your rig?

And second, my understanding is that very few places have full hookup so how will you handle emptying the grey and black tanks?

How was your drive home; tunnel or ferry?
