No cigarette lighter charger?!!!

Hello,

I was parked next to someone with a new 2018 Legacy (39'). I provided him with many helpful tips and suggestions, but when he bought his TPMS it has a cigarette lighter power source, however, he only has 2 USB connections where it appears a cigarette lighter used to be! Are there any hidden cigarette lighter connections he can use?

TIA

TST TPMS uses USB power...

does his cig lighter plug disconnect from the TPMS display? Does it have the standard small USB connector to the monitor? Just get the proper adapter for USB if it does...

It does not. I did locate a converter cable on Amazon, but cannot imagine there would be NO cig lighter available; my 2017 Berkshire has 3!

Thanks.

the 'ol' cigarette type 12v power source is quickly becoming obsolete, so few use them now that USB is becoming the standard since that's what most folks demand now.. Most of us would hardly even know what 'cigarette' lighter you're referring to! : )

It's easy to add power ports or USB outlets, there are many combo's you can pick.

My TST 507 came with a cig lighter for power with another cord for hard wiring.

Are you ssying that I could be using a USB with the small USB connector on one end? The difference in voltage doesn't matter?

I will be happy if that is true.

Yes if the lighter plug for the TPS has a regular usb that the cord plugs into then it's fine, the other end is a micro usb. The step down from 12v to 5v is done in the plug.
It would look something like this

TireTraker can be charged with USB cable but I only need to charge the monitor once every few days. I think the Monitor is good for 24+ hours on a full charge.

My new 2019 Rockwood 2606 WDS has a cigarette lighter type charger and two USB's on one of the nightstands plus there are two more USB's on the stereo system. Whoever designed it, I'd like to thank them!

My TPMS needs the Cig lighter
My Garmen DEZL needs the cig lighter - Can't use traffic services without their cable
My 2018 Legacy 38C does not have one. For the money spent I shouldn't have to install my own.

I'm just sayin....

You could also just as easily 'blame' the device manufacturer(s) for not giving you a USB or 120v plug-in option. Just sayin. : /

btw, converters are also probably easier than trying to install an old-school 12v plug.

A lot of the newer 12v adapters actually use a USB output that you can unplug and use it in a USB. My Tireminder display uses either.

Just sayin...but the converters (tried several) do not play well with the Garmin DEZL. A lot of these devices need 12v and USB standard is 5v. Also, not the first to say everything is going to USB, well, not so much with them nasty old 12 volt requirements.

Garmin provides both a 12V to USB-b Mini
and a USB-A to USB-b mini cords.

My nuvi and model 51 both require USB-b Mini for power input.

Maybe the next versions of GPS from Garmin will focus on USB-A. I rented a couple cars last week and had hell of a time finding the 12v socket buried in center consol. I am concerned that if/when 12v sockets go away we will not have enough power available to run multiple "plug-in" items.
GPS, TPMS, Camera, phone charger etc

USB - Butt Lighter

Yes sir you are correct however, the Dezl versions for Trucks an RVs requires the cigarette lighter cord to power the traffic management system and etc, I like these units as they provide a lot of bridge and obstruction warnings in real time as well as when a trip is planned out.

The dash cams are all usb so no problem there. If only USB and Lighter were both 12vdc or 5vdc an adapter would do the trick. Alas, that won't happen. I like the feed back. THANKS!

Don't know about that rig, but they call them 'power ports' now and they may have them hidden. My Toyota Tundra has them under the passenger side of the dash. A friend has his hidden in the center consol. Our REV has it on the dash near the passenger side. They are usually under a flat cover.

12v power ports and USB outlets are dirt cheap and easy to connect, you can get them in any combination you like. The USB outlets connect to 12v as well. There are many adapters for 12v power points that provide USB power as well.

All good. But USB is 5 volts. Going to be interesting to see them come up with a 12 volt version. Garmin doesn’t even like a 110 to 12 volt converter Nd Moana’s about it and shuts down. No, not a brand issue as I have tried 3 different converters. LOL anything to make the manufacturers money.
