Protection for TOAD

Getting ready to fix our Honda CRV for towing behind the Legacy. Going with Blue Ox baseplate and tow bar and Air Force One brake system. What mud flap are folks putting across the back of the coach? Any other items I should look at?

Thanks!

Doesn't the Legacy come with one from the factory (I know the Berk does).

If you want some over the top protection, take a look at the Roadmaster "Alaska Pack" setup. This is what we will get for our TOAD

Legacy doesn't come with a mud flap and I think they run about $900. Plus the exhaust is out the rear so amid flap has to be fitted around it. I have the Blue Ox and bought the KarGard II. Got it at Amazon for around $400. I think it's actually by Roadmaster but it interfaces perfectly. Rolls up to store against the back of the RV above the tow bar. About 5,000 towing miles so far with no damage.

Thanks. I have also been looking at the Kar Guard II. Any issues with the rear exhaust pipe?

No problems at all with the exhaust. First install will take about ten minutes and you'll need a small bottle of LocTite (just a couple of drops) to install the pins on your tow bar. Also, the mesh part is replaceable if you ever need to.

I double checked the price; paid $373 with free Prime shipping. That was last May. Keep it in the garage when not traveling just because the UV is so bad here in Florida. Also, I was mistaken; it is by Blue Ox.

Sorry if I was confusing; I don't have a mud flap, just saw on the forum where several people with different models had bought them and what they paid for them.

Yep....works great. The mesh screen sits right on top. If the tow bar, which connects under the front bumper of the Jeep. There are two bolts on the tow bar that hold the yokes on that connect to the base plate pins. To install the Kar Gard, you replace those two bolts with two provided that have an upper pin that ties into the mesh screen at the bumper. The end at the coach has a square yoke that goes around the male end of the tow bar and tightens there with two bolts. Once the tow bar is attached and all your chains and cables hooked up, just unroll the mesh guard and pull it over the pins at the bumper, then put the locking clips on the posts to hold it in place. There are two arms that automatically fold to match the back of the coach when turning. Anything thrown up by the coach is going to hit the bottom of the mesh screen and be kept down.

Do the mud flaps work?

Anyone here use the mudflap on the Berk without anything additional ?

Does it do the job, or should one also have something like the Kar guard ?

Kenny,

From my research (which includes the video segment on gone with the Wynns), mudflats alone do not provide protection. The complete bullet-proof solution is to get the Alaska Pack from Roadmaster. It includes both the tow defender (screen) and Guardian (rock guard for grill & windshield).

Some opt to use only the tow defender, so you have options out there

No issues with the exhaust system? I am still debating. We have towed our Wrangler now a little over 10,000 miles with no issues but maybe just lucky so far. We are using no guard at all.
