Recaulk Front and Rear Cap Seams

Just washed the roof and noticed the caulking on the front and rear cap seams is starting to dry out and crack. Anyone replaced theirs? Thoughts on using Dicor sealant vs Eterabond tape... Thanks

I did both, I removed the old sealant and put Self leveling dicor sealant, l let it set a couple of days and put 6 inch Eternabond, some will say why you are putting Eternabond over it, but it's the way I did, no second guessing if it's sealed. I also did all my cleaning for the Eternabond when I was cleaning up for dicor, I use Acetone and have had no problems, my roof is a TPO roof.

I peeled off the old caulk, wiped with acetone, and put Eternabond over the seam.

Eternabond has 10 year life, dicor has 2 to 5 years.

Kind of curious - what happens to the dicor 5 years after being covered by the 10 year Eternabond? I would imagine the eternabond extends the life of the dicor but to 10 years? (I have neither the expertise nor the experience to know for sure).

I didn't add that i use Eternaprime in my earlier post before the Eternabond.

I really couldn't tell you the answer. I do know some on the forums, me included, have put Eternabond on the seams before problems started. While doing mine I noticed that FR put Eternabond on the slides where the roof meets the outer wall flange.

The caulk will dry out and start to crack. That’s normal and a normal maintenance item to touch it up. Eternabond is a much more long term solution. No need to remove the existing caulk before applying the Eternabond. When I did my last trailer, I touched up the Dicor and allowed it to cure for a week before applying Eternabond over it. I used the 6” wide tape on that joint.

Thinking of doing the end cap joints in the spring and Eternabobd sounds like a good solution for the roof Sean's. what is everyone using to refresh the vertical seams on the end caps where they meet the sidewalk of the trailer?

You can put Eternabond on the vertical seams if your walls are white, grey or black. Otherwise use Dicor no-sag caulk.

I use ProFlex RV for the vertical joints.

The top of my cap seam is bumpy because of caulk on top of screw/bolt heads being covered. I'm wondering if it would be smart to sand the bumps down a bit before I place the tape over the seam?

Thank you. I've sealed all of our windows with pro flex RV clear. I'll either use that or get some white to do the verticle Sean's.

I was just reading through the documents for my Alpha Systems TPO (thermoplastic olefin) roof. It says to use only Alpha Systems 1010 Sealant.

I know that most manufacturers are going to promote their products and not say anything about any others.

I find it interesting that not one member on the forums have brought this up before and they seem to be going on what others have said they used. I know, I'm included in this.

For Dicor sealants (https://dicorproducts.com/images/RudysRoofbook_16.pdf), they state that there are many forumulas of TPO and not all are compatible with many sealants. If your TPO roofing has a fleece backing (pre-2010) then Dicor Lap Sealant may be used. If the TPO roofing is solid color without the fleece backing (2011 +) then you need to use the 2-part Ultra Sealant System. (Dicor Products | Ultra Sealant System)
"We found some TPO roofing membranes are not chemically compatible with off-the-shelf sealants, resulting in bloating and disfiguring of the membrane. Although mostly a cosmetic problem (i.e. it does not reduce the performance of the roofing material or sealant) Dicor proceeded to develop the new two-part Ultra Sealant System to help eliminate or significantly reduce these cosmetic issues in most cases."

On reading the web site for Pro Flex RV Flexible Sealant (https://www.geocelusa.com/product/pr...xible-sealant/) , 3/4 down the page under Limitations it states:
"Do not use on traffic-bearing surfaces. Do not use on extruded polystyrene insulation sheathing (Styrofoam, etc.), TPO, or EPDM. Do not use on acrylic skylight glazing surfaces. Do not use in areas where food is processed or stored. Do not use for potable water applications. This product in colors may not be sold in the state of California. The clear product is exempt from this rule, except in SCAQMD counties."

Just thought some of you would like to know what I found.

Wandering, nice to meet you too. Regarding my roof, I recauked the front and rear cap seams before we left on this trip. I also bought eternabond tape and will tape over the seams in a few weeks. I also plan to tape over the side seams so I don’t have to worry about them. Safe travels....

I used a heat gun to soften the old caulk. It was fairly easy to peel off once it was warm.
